1988 Nissan z24i D21 pickup. It runs ok when in neutral but backfires through the throttle body. I can rev the engine and hold it at high RPMs in neutral with no problems but as soon as i put it in gear and try to drive it loses power. I can only get it to 25 MPH. Replaced fuel filter and checked fuel pressure, it holds a steady 60 psi. Also made sure timing was set correctly. Had to replace intake manifold gasket due to vacuum leak. Thought the leak was the problem but apparently not. Seems like its may be flooding. Replaced Oxygen sensor as well.
I don't have an answer for you but I have just about the same problem. 1988 nissan d21 throttle body injected. Starts and idles just fine. Rev it up at idle and still no problem. Put it in 1st, let the clutch out and we start moving.. gets to about 25mph "engine under a load" and about 80% power loss, if I continue to accelerate the truck will make it to 100% power loss and die. If I let up on the gas pedal and push in the clutch the engine will go back to normal, I can get it past 25mph but it is very difficult and takes about a minute to make it from 25mph to 40mph. It seems to be worse and die faster if I put the pedal to the metal. The check engine light will not come on during any of this. Also...I have a snap-on computer hooked up at the same time as I'm doing all of this and everything checks out fine.... please help
My 87 nissan pu will start but then cuts right off and back fire out the intake 2 times. Then i try to start it ,it turns over wont start i turn the key off and it bace fires. It is a 4 banger with 8 plugs. Please HELP
Check your intake and exhaust modules. I have a 1987 D21 and had the same problem (if I understand your post). I replaced the modules located behind the driver side headlights and it fixed the problem. Good luck! I hope this helps.

you may have a clogged catalitic converter and or off timing...good luck
catalitic converters can get red cherry when faulty..also you can also check your map sensor
