I had the fuel pump replaced, but it still whines loud. Fuel filter is ok (took it off and blew through it- no restriction). When I apply more throttle to get it going, as the RPM's go up, the van does speed up, but it's isn't steady. It's irratic, but not a hard lurch, just surges of power, that become more steady the higher the RPM. No one seems to be able to figure it out. My fuel pressure regulator seems ok I think as there is no fuel in the vacuum hose, but I feel no suction on the regulator nipple, just from the hose. I also pinched off the fuel intake hose between the fuel filter and the intake, and the van stalled, then pinched off the fuel return underneath that, and same thing. Is there a way to hook up a fuel pressure gage, and if so, where?
Hi pressure in the fuel tank would be a vent solenoid problem .EVAP system ! Your hesitation problem could be a TPS - throttle position sensor that is worn . I would find another mechanic , testing , not thinking is the way to a proper fix > exhaust manifold to glow red , plugged catalytic converter . Have the exhaust back pressure tested .

Check your intake and exhaust modules. I have a 1987 D21 and had the same problem (if I understand your post). I replaced the modules located behind the driver side headlights and it fixed the problem. Good luck! I hope this helps.

the egr should be replaced or removed and cleaned with a good carburettor cleaner and checked for operation. the 34 refers to the knock sensor not having the right info to be sent to the ecu(in simple terms). you may have to replace the knock sensor but this is in the centre of the engine under the intake. takes a few hours. plan of attack: first have the vehicle scanned for p0 codes and with a scanner that reads "live data". what youre looking for is when youre accelerating the engine timing should be changing. if its not, change the knock sensor. then attack the egr which may be a little more difficult to fix. try the cleaning and check for operation. verfity all hoses are good and routing is correct. verify vacuum at the source. what causes an engine to start running great is it is dragging the affected cylinder and can longer be felt at those rpms. it wouldnt hurt to perform a compression check on this either. let know. cheers

It could be the fuel pump. Thats what I would think. Hope this helps!?

Mechanic is replacing the fuel pump (again). Said when he took off the gas cap, there was a lot of pressure. Also, when he took off the fuel line, it was HIGHLY pressurized. He's going to try to track it down.
He said he thinks the hesitation is in the transmission. I don't agree. There is something that feels like slippage in overdrive when driving in town (low RPM's), but it's only noticible on the highway if I get on the accelerator, and before it downshifts to gain speed. I just don't see how this is related to the hesitation, since I can feel the hesitation at many speeds and RPM's, but only feel the slippage in overdrive. Plus, the ****** slipping wouldn't cause the exhaust manifold to glow red. Possible injector issue?
