I heard a "noise" that sounded faintly like I was running over rubber chunks or similar, then the car died, black smoke from the exhaust, followed by white smoke from the exhaust and a burning smell
In general, I know there will be alot of variables, what should I figure on spending to get the repairs made? I live in the central Arizona area if that matters...thanks!In general, I know there will be alot of variables, what should I figure on spending to get the repairs made? The O2 sensor could have come loose, also look around the area of the O2 sensor for any cracks in the pipe, look for black coloring on the pipe, this will indicate the leak area. As exhaust smoke is blackish and will coat the leaking area.
Black smoke suggests that engine oil is getting into the combustion chambers.
This could be the head gasket has blown a hole, or that the piston (liners) are worn which would probably mean a new engine (rather than a rebore, which I doubt people do much these days).
Isuzu Troopers were underpowered, I read on the wikipedia page, so I guess that the engines may tend to wear out.
If it is the head gasket, then it could be repaired fairly cheaply. A mechanic would be able to tell the difference from the noise that the engine makes. I can't say I have ever heard an engine with worn pistols but someone told me one can hear them "slap"

If you are really lucky then it might be a hole in the exhaust before the silencer, which could also affect the power but I am not sure why there'd be black smoke. If it were an exhaust problem then there would be a loud noise from the exhaust too.
if the noise is heard when you turn and not moving, then you may have some problem with ball joints or tire rod ends.
if the noise is heard when you are moving only then it could be the brake wear indicator start to touch the brake rotor
a rubber smell?? the best thing you can do is diagnose it properly by blocking it up high enough of the ground and let it smoke then slide yourself under there and see where it originates ... check for witness drip marks on the exhaust first??
This could be as simple as the EGR (exhaust gas recycling) valve stuck open. This valve is supposed to open at a specific time, recycling the exhaust gasses back through the engine. If they stick open, the engine is not getting the correct air mixture to burn the fuel efficently, causing black smoke and lack of power. Have the garage remove and blank off this valve. If it runs ok, then a new EGR is needed.
This is almost certainly a split hose - mine was the large hose coming out of the bottom of the EGR valve. Speaking to a parts guy at my local Jaguar dealer, he said that the new part is uprated as Jaguar are aware that this is a problem. The split allows more air in and results in the ECU changing the mixture and over fuelling - Black smoke is an indication of un-burnt Diesel. As well as the black smoke you may also notice a whistle/whine or sucking noise when you accelerate and a lack of power / lumpiness at around 2000rpm.
