Morer info. needed.............................If it is not shifting down out of overdrive,it could be electronic or governor related,dirt related(in valve body of transmission)or a busted overdrive hub in some models if slipping.
You have to give better info......................model make and year,size engine and type of transmission. don-ohio

first of all the trouble code your giving is (a) the wrong one (b) or your not reading it properly a code # P0452 is evaporative emission control system sensor low input so I'm confused here but the vehicle speed sensor will throw a code if you are stepping down hard on the gas in gravel or dirt and the drive wheel slips it will pick this up and set a code also does the speedometer work properly ?/normal speed registering, you could have a worn universal joint do you feel a jolt or hear a squeaking noise when driving in rapid succession slow to rapid as speed increases a weak universal joint will give then the rear end will quickly catch up to fast for the sensors normal rotation it's magnetic and is triggered by a spot on the rear that is magnet attractive and if it doesn't see it to send a pulse to the pcm the code sets what size motor is this?

Sounds like a transmission problem, specifically that perhaps the transmission fluid is low if your truck has an automatic transmission, or the clutch is slipping terribly if it has a manual transmission.

1997 Mercury Mountaineer Overdrive flashing

When the OD light flashes it means the transmission has developed a fault. As to what the fault may be is yet to be seen without the system being scanned. In many cases the light indicates the transmission is slipping, you may not feel it slipping, but the computer (called the PCM) senses it through the internal speed sensors that measure main shaft input speed and shaft output speed in RPM. Other problems like shift solenoids can cause this as well. Another factor can be the transmission fluid is worn out, it should be replaced along with a new filter every 60,000 miles minimum.

My SUV is choking and it hesitates

which engine? 2L I4 or 2.5L V6?
chocking, it bogs full time.
total loss of power at all times? any speed, any hill, any gear.
is this a A/T or M/T car, the A/T can slip. easy
does the engine lack power, or does the tranny slip.
slipping is easy to discover, the RPM of the engine rise fast
but you go now where fast.
bogging can happen in many modes. (all or just 1: pick one)
all permutations
1: hot engine?
2: cold or both.?
3: wont race even in neutral, but idles ok. at 800 rpm.?
4: only with a fast right foot,called tip in throttle. but recovers.!
5: lost power at all driving loads, and worse on hills.?
6: all the above.?
in a real shop, i drive it and in a few minutes all the above is seen and vastly more, that is why online help is so bad, (me too)
no inputs. = wild guessing.....
heck i even notice things like?
dash volt meter dropping. below 14v at any time running.
overheating
CEL glowing or worse flashing (USA feature , OP never said)
old noises and vibration.
clutch slipping or A/T slipping.
Scan tool connected, and seeing pending codes, or any odd PID behaviors.
bad idle speed, idle speeds not controlled correctly.
and 100 more things, Ill stop here, it's a complex machine.

When was your last tuneup? Could be minor or major depending on your past maintenance. FI ? Fuel pump, Filter, Regulator, ECM. Need to have someone check your computer codes.

My is shifting from 2 to drive back to 2 why is it doning that

Check your tranny fluid levels- if they are low your transmition will slip between gears, however if you notice any kind of free reving while its shifting (like being reved up when in park or neutral) then the hydrostatic clutches are slipping and the transmition needs repair.

Another thing you should investigate is your transmition kick down bar (it shifts the trany into a lower gear when accelerating hard to help pick up speed.
