That means the transmission is going into Limp mode - something's wrong that is making the car believe it can be damaged by the speeds the upper gears will allow you to reach. For starters, check the fluid level (or just change it - it's not a bad idea), and disconnect the battery for an hour or so to put the ECU into relearn mode - this will clear current fault codes and allow you a fresh start to see if the condition reappears, or if it was a fluke failure of some part that caused the car to repeatedly go into limp mode.

I was driving my 1990 nissan 300zx 2+2 auto trans and it stopped going it would rev up but it wouldn't go anywhere I tried going in R 1 2 but it would just rev up one of my friends believes it might be the speed sensor?

A little late, but for future users who might find this - your problem is either low transmission fluid, a bad solenoid, or a burnt out shift band. Check your transmission fluid (or have a Jiffy Lube check it for you) and if it's full then smell it. If it smells burnt, you've got a bad shift band. If your fluid is full and doesn't smell burnt, then it's probably a solenoid. Both a shift band and a solenoid will require a rebuild by a mechanic. If the fluid is low, refill it and see if that solves your shifting. If not, take it to a mechanic. If it does solve your shifting problem, then check for leaks, because transmission fluid doesn't go anywhere unless there's a leak.

Sounds like you have lost a shaft(sungear) in the transmission. It can be repaired, but you can get a used one for less than half the cost. Repair-$1300.00+, used - around $500.00

If tranny fluid is clear and at normal level, then the issue is with the transmission - it is getting ready to go sayonara.

Better get that fix before you get stranded.

Hi,
The 1st>>2nd shift on the Subaru 4EAT automatic transmission can be more abrupt, but 3500 is too high.
Is there any delay when shifting from Park to Drive?
Does the Power light flash on startup? If it does, you can pull the codes by following these instructions.

This trans has 'bands' that can be adjusted. I'm not 100% sure they affect the 1st>2nd gear shift, but maybe they need adjusted.

Take a look @ ultimatesubaru.org/forum and http://bbs.legacycentral.org. 2 sites dedicated to Subarus.

Good luck,
Td

1990zx non turbo, car doesnt always shift out of first gear.

Check fluid level first. The throttle position sensor could be faulty or misadjusted. It should be .4 - .5 volts when fully closed and 4.0 volts wide open throttle.
Next check line pressure. Line pressure at idle in drive should be 61 - 67psi.
If the line pressure is ok it will be an internal problem.

1994 F350 transmission intermittent problem

I had the same problem in my 96 f-350. The transmission has slipped recording a slip code in the transmission. You can pull the codes and get it. I shifts into a safe mode that increases the pressure inside your transmission as part od a fail safe. Plain and simple, you have to have the tranny rebuilt.

Transmission won't shift

The car is going into what is called "limp mode". It's detecting a problem of some sort that is drivetrain-related (which could mean a faulty sensor or transmission controller, or a fault with the engine), and it's locking the transmission into second gear to protect it from excessive road speed and RPM. Do you have a check-engine light on? Whether you do or not, you may have a stored fault code in the car that can be read with a code scanner, and if so, that'll be a good starting point. If you can get the car scanned, it'd help a lot - post back up with what you find out and we'll take it from there.

Loosing power/transmission

Could be an issue with losing boost from your turbo. Can you hear your turbo spinning correctly? I know some TDIs have turbos that are a little easier to hear than other for no apparent reason. Are all your vaccuum lines in good shape? Are the hoses from the turbo to and from the intercooler in good shape? Maybe when something (vacuum hose, intercooler hose) gets warm enough it flexes and leaks. Right when this happens you should pull over (if possible) open the hood and have someone give it a little fuel. You might be able to hear a vacuum leak or an air leak in the intercooler piping. It could also be a bum sensor that sticks at a certain value and when you stopped and restarted you unstuck it.
You need to start eliminating items or find any other symptoms you can to help narrow this down. It is a loss of power right, and that's what is keeping it in the lower gear? Or does it seem more like it is just stuck in lower gear?
