It has to be leaking some where if not on the outside then you have a bad head or intake gasket and the water is getting burned in the motor. Check all under the car for a leak if none found then the only place it can be going is in the motor. Do you notice a white smoke coming from your exhaust, if so that is water and coolant being burned. The coolant jar your refering too is the overflow and that is normal when it overheats. Used to be when it overheated it just shot steam out of the radiator cap, nowdays all that is captured and re used. Look around the water pump for an obvious signs of any leakage. might just be a bad pump and the engine is heating up and overflowing

09 Dodge Grand Caravan smell coolant since October, now losing coolant but no leaks.

Check the hose connection to the heat exchange. If there is a leak there, you will smell it inside the vehicle and you may not see a leak on the ground as it evaporates when the car is running.

97 honda magna vf750 my radiator overflow bottle keeps feeling up, the bike doesn't overheat but I have to keep adding fluid there are no leaks and my oil is fine, any ideas?

My first thought is radiator cap. I never had a water cooled bike but on a car radiator cap will open and let the water go to the reservoir tank at a certain pressure. The cap could be allowing the water to run to the plastic tank at to low psi and when the tank fills up it starts spilling out..

Overheating indicator flashes, but has oil, water.

Hi. The contacts in the Coolant bottle get contaminated and then don't pick up the water level. Brige the contacts at the water botlle and start the car, if the coolant/temp light behaves for 5 min or so after starting the car, then change the coolant bottle/resevoir.

I let my car heat up to get frost of window for about fifteen minutes. When I went out the frost was still on window and no heat coming from dash and car was overheating. I shut it off, let it cool down...

Start with engine cool, remove rad cap, start engine and turn heater on. Top up rad level and Let engine run until it get's up to normal operating temperature with cap off and add coolant as you see it go down. Watch in rad for coolant to start moving quicker, once gauge gets close to normal temperature, indicating that thermostat has opened. Wait until you see that 2 or 3 times, then top up and install rad cap. Top up coolant return bottle to proper level . You'll want to keep a close eye on coolant return bottle level for next little while. If coolant got that low in the first place, you have a leak somewhere that will have to be found.

Heat is not working - coolant was low so filled it.... problem here... heard something about an air pocket

If you dont have an external coolant leak anywhere under your hood that has shown up on your driveway it could be the intake manifold or the headgasket leaking. Also check the thermostate to solve the heat issue.

I only have heat when I step on the gas.

does the fan speed up when you step on the gas, or does it blow a consistent speed, just warmer when the engine rpms go up? If it blows faster when you step on the gas, it's just a battery or alternator issue. you start by replacing the battery then testing the alternator. on the other hand, if the fan speed is consistent and the air coming out of the vents gets warmer when you step on the gas, the issue may be with your water pump.

Won't blow out heat while sitting still, but will generate heat while riding along

Most likely causes of this is either low coolant level or a plugged heater core, of which, I'd lean towards the low coolant. Rarer causes would be a slipping drive belt for your water pump, or a dying water pump.

Check the coolant level in the coolant bottle and top off with a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water if it is low. There should be markings on the side of the bottle to let you know the proper level; markings for both a cold engine and a hot engine.

If the level is low, you might want to have the vehicle checked to make sure that there isn't a leak somewhere.

How to replace thermostat on

Do this when cool. Take radiator cap off, start the engine, turn on heat (not defrost) and now top up coolant to about an inch or 2 from top of radiator, as level drops down, and let vehicle run until the radiator fan comes on, then off, about 3 times, and add coolant as needed while it's running. After that, put radiator cap back on tight & make sure return bottle is filled to proper level. Now try that & see how heat is, temperature gauge etc, and keep an eye on return bottle level for a while. Let me know how it is.
