The left engine mount usually tears apart and can not be visually checked. Lift the engine with a hoist an inch to check

The torque strut, which is mounted underneath on the passenger side is what controls the front to back movement of the engine. The engine will shift slightly with a healthy torque strut, but shouldn't move more that an inch or so. The torqu strut is easily changed, but you will want the front wheels off the ground as you will have to manipulate the motor somewhat to get the bolts started.

If your engine mount is bad is it dangerous to drive

Better to not drive as it can stress the drive axles by the engine raising when torqued putting axles in a bind . If you do drive try not to take off any harder than necessary .

Can bad 02 sensors cause the engine to vibrate and make a humming noise? or bad motor mounts

Bad O2 sensors affect the fuel/air mixture. Vibrations can be caused by many sources, hard to diagnose here. To test the motor mounts. apply the parking brake, open the hood. Put the car in drive and step on the brake with one foot while applying full throttle with the gas pedal. Watch for excessive engine lifting on one side. Be careful not to have the engine fan to contact the shroud. Now do the same in reverse. If the engine lifts excessively, your mounts are shot. If the engine stays put with only a slight movement from torque, then the mounts are good.

How do i know which motor mount needs replacement

With car in drive/reverse and foot hard on brake if the engine moves when gas pedal is depressed and quickly released in both D&R, then that mount/mounts is defective...

Engine mount should be replaced if:

1) The hard rubber surface is covered with heat check cracks.

2) The rubber is separated from the metal plate of the engine mount.

3) The rubber is split through the center of the engine mount

The transmission case will crack or break if either engine mounts or transmission rear mount is broken...Here is a GM Service bulletin addressing the issue:

#02-07-30-024B

The transmission mount (see drawing) test:

>Raise and support the vehicle

>Raise the transmission/transaxle in order to remove the weight from the transmission/transaxle mount and create slight tension in the rubber.

Replace trans. mount if anyone of the three conditions listed above exist

Liter engine automatic

you probably have a bad motor mount. Look under the hood, passenger side of engine compartment cast iron mount with rubber insert. Is the rubber insert worn visually inspecting. If you cannot tell, have a friend start the car, emergency brake on, foot on brake, shift from park to drive, does the motor jump in the mount? shift from drive to reverse, does it jump again. If so bad mount, local auto repair store should carry. you will have to jack up the engine carefully not much and not directly on oil pan, you just have to relieve the weight on the mount to replace. several m10 bolts, 15mm socket to remove. retighten fasteners to 58+/- 9Nm of torque. good luck.

When i shift to reverse or drive, the transmission kinda kicks like it's slipping. I was told that the lower motor mount may be bad

Indeed the engine mounts can cause this type of symptom, have a local shop check the engine for excessive lift up on gear engagement.

I believe that I have either a bad transmission mount or mounts, and possible a bad motor mount or mounts because the car vibrates in drive while running and also vibrates in neutral while running but not...

Get a friend to open the hood and look at the engine go up or down in the engine compartment when the brakes are firmly applied and switching between reverse and drive. Look for the motor mounts for behavior where tears exist in the rubber.

Engine clunks when it shifts

This is caused by a bad engine mount or something that came loose, put the car in drive hold the brake and give it gas, see if motor jumps up then do the same in reverse, if the motor jumps up a lot then the mounts are bad, hope this helps.

If you have a motor mount going bad, are you suppose to be able to hear a noise of some kind?

Not usually. when a mount is bad, you can FELL the car **** when accell of a stop or changing from Drive to reverse. To check it, put on your parking brake, now hold the brake pedal with your left foot, now put the car in reverse, and press the gas slightly, the engine will move slightly, now put it in drive, the engine should shift slightly, if it moves a LOT like a few inches or moves upward, you may have a mount bad and it needs to be inspected.

2000 pontiac sunfire 2.4L twin cam. When put in drive I hear a loud bang and when driving it has a quieter bang when it shifts gears.

Check your motor mounts, it sound like your motor is rocking back and forth. You can confirm this by watching the engine while someone shifts it in and out of gear for you.
