get a test light and check plug (connector) to headlamp. one hi beam , one low beam and ground. if they light , lamp is bad, if the test light is confusing just switch headlamps from side to side and see if the lamp that does work works on other side or plug.

paint the gears with some white paint ,have a look and on this model you will the timing marks,they are 8mm holes on then cam and inj pump if i remember correctly ,they line up with a hole behind ,use a drill bit to lock in place

It sounds like you have a fan belt slipping Check the condition of your belt,or belts. If the belt appears old, and weather cracked, it should be replaced. If the belt is slipping, you would temporarity lose power steering, and the water pump would stop pumping coolant causing the engine to overheat.

Get it into a warm garage is about the only fix. You could try spraying De-Icer on and around the cable, if you can get to it...
