OK, what's your question? If you crawl under it and look around you should see what needs to be unhooked and removed. Like the house to the fuel fill, two straps holding it up and you will have to unhook the fuel gauge wire and fuel lines going to the fuel pump. Be sure to drain/pump any fuel out in the tank first.

Check the windshield for a leak or any wires or hoses that pass through the firewall where they pass through to make sure they are sealed.

You don't have radiator cap. You have expansion tank. The tank has a cap on it.

May be a bad brake interlock switch. If the switch is bad, it doesnt know you are pressing the brake, so wont start and wont shift out of park. Sometimes it's a different switch from the brake lights.

When a timing chain is off an engine, it will not run and probably won't even crank and if it is an interference engine there will be damage to the valves (at least).

When a timing chain is badly worn the idling engine usually produces the very distinctive timing chain rattle (but not always).

If you suspect the valve timing is maladjusted, the timing should be checked and adjusted if required, replacing any worn components...
Some engines will not tolerate any maladjustment of valve timing without sustaining damage.

Some engines are quite happy to run with retarded valve timing though power output suffers but sometimes mid-range power can be improved. The exact symptoms depend on how much the valve timing is maladjusted.

All modern engines display similar symptoms of a failing but not yet failed valve.

A failing exhaust valve usually provides few or no clues to its condition to all but those with the most developed sensitivity to the condition of an engine and how it runs - a suspicion the engine isn't quite as crisp as it should be and perhaps a disturbance in the rhythm of the exhaust note. It needs a cylinder drop test and/or a cylinder leakage test to pinpoint the guilty valve.

A failing intake valve provides a somewhat stronger case as that cylinder will run weak due to the leakage of combustion back into the intake blowing back the incoming charge and so tends to produce a less than smooth idle.
If such an engine is dismantled and the valve visually examined there will be little evidence other than a dark spot across the seat...

Since you were able to start it again, even if only for a short time, I would say the motor is likely OK and there is some sort of electrical issue (grounded wire, bad sensor, failing part, etc.)

Double check the cables and grommets holding everything in place. If parts of the cable can move, the linkage on the transmission wont.

1400 feet is almost no height a all. You are correct about vehicle engines needing some small adjustments to the amount of fuel entering the engine at high altitude but hardly any correction is needed at 1400 feet - now if it was 1400 metres it would be reasonable to blame altitude as a factor in your car's lack of uphill performance.

My instinct is to suggest there is a problem with your car. 40,000 miles is no guarantee of no problems, it is after all 20 years old so the injector spray patterns could be bad or the catalytic converter could be half blocked, either of which can have a dramatic effect on performance...
