Found large spring at end of cable unattached lying on top of deck cover. Where does the spring attach in order to engage the blades on the riding mower? The lever is very loose and when checking, I found the cable with the large spring attachment lying on top of the deck cover and I do not know where to attach it in order to get the blades to turn and my grass is getting very overgrown. Before this happened, the mower would not disengage even after I moved lever down to turn off blades. Mower starts but lever would not engage and then in checking is where I found large spring lying there. I do not have my manual and have no idea where to attach in order to get mower blades functioning.

There are 4 pulleys on your deck. Two for the blades, these are the big ones on the outsides. To the insides there are two, one on left side is an idler and the one on the right is a tenioning pulley that hooks to the blade engage lever throught the cable you found. Look on top of this pulley and see if it has a piece sticking up. If so the spring at the end of the cable attaches here. Slide it over. You also need to find the clip that goes through the little hole in the end that keeps it from sliding off. Make sure that the cable is properly routed and attached near the back of the deck. If it is still attached, good, if not you will have to find that pin also.

If this is helpful, please rate.

Testimonial: "I tracked down the problem, hooked up the cable, put the pin back in, got the blades to engage before I got your response.Thank you just the same."

AnthonyBR82, This was helpful. Thank You. I found that debris was in my tensioner pulley. It engages fine now. When I was cleaning the debris out. I found a broken spring. It attaches to the forward part of the main deck. Left of center. The blades don't really want to disengage now. I can shut off the mower and pull on the tensioner pulley by hand. Where does the spring I found connect? Thanks Frank (Gunny G USMC)

    Hello Frank (Gunny G),
I will use my Craftsman deck for an example. There are three springs. One larger that is attached to the end of the blade engage cable. Some decks have linkage here and will not have a spring. The other two are smaller and are involved in the detensioning process. When the operator disengages the blades by the lever the tension on the engaging mechanism from the lever is no longer a factor, this allows the two smaller springs down on the deck to retract the tensioning pulley and engage the blade brakes. The tensioning mechanism on the deck does the retracting of pulley and engaging the brakes simultaneously. The blade brakes are friction devices that apply pressure to the blades associated pulleys to slow and stop them. The location of the two are low on the deck. You found one on the left that goes from the mechanism to the post more forward on the deck. The other is on the right and it goes back to the post on the deck. They work the same way, so you can reference the right side. In order to repair your deck you will need to order the replacement spring. You can do this through a repair shop or order online. You can find the model number of your mower under the seat (usually). With the model number you will be able to access an illustrated parts drawing(s). Then you find your part its number on the drawing. Look to the right and look that number up and it will give you a part number and you will be able to order it is in stock.

If you need more help with this, just right back with your mower's model number so I can help you.

Semper Fi Gunny, and thank you for your service.

Respectfully, Anthony (anthonybr82), former MM2/SS, USN

Blades won't engage on my zero turn 50" cut husqvarna (approx2011) I found a 7" spring on the ground and don't know where it goes back on. Can u help

Looking underneath the mower on top of the deck there should be a flat metal arm with a flat faced pulley on the end. This pulley pushes against the belt that drives the mower deck . The spring should be hooked on that arm and pulled tight over to a place on the deck and this is what keeps the belt tight enough to turn the blades when you engage the pto switch. My recommendations to put this back on is to remove the belt pulley cover on the deck right side roll the belt off at that pulley giving you a bunch of slack so you can hook up the spring and put the belt in the right position on everything else then go back to the deck right hand pulley start putting the belt back on that pulley and when it is to tight to get it all the way on reach under the deck and use the blade as leverage to finish turning the pulley and walk that belt on the rest of the way ,it will not hurt a thing, all you are doing is pulling that 7 inch spring over like it was intended to be, then replace the cover on the deck spindle.

Blade still running after lever is disenagaged on Sears Craftsman LT2000 2010 riding mower.

the moveable arm that the blade engage pulley is attached to has a hole for a spring as well as the deck (or at least an attached immoveable bracket). spring goes there to bring the blades to a stop when putting the lever in the off possition.

I have a troy bilt riding mower blades will not engage in the 1 or 2 deck setting

There is a spring attached to a tensioner that probably came unhooked while changing the belt. Higher deck settings push the deck backwards enough to spin the blades, the lower setting need the spring tensioner to take up the slack in the belt.

When i engaged the blades - they didn't - found clutch cable detattched - dont know where to reattach it

The blade engage cable attaches to the tensioning pulley. It is the one forward and a little left of the the right blade pulley. The spring on the end of the cable slides over the top and is retained by a clip that slides throught the hole in the top of the rod. If you can not find the clip on the mower deck then you will need to replace it (about the same size as the one holding the cable in place on the post at the back of the deck). or you will need to improvise a substitute until you can obtain a clip. May be able to find an appropriately sized clip at a hardware store. If not, let me know and I will tell you how to order one.

I hope this helps get you mowing.

Blade engager is disconected under the mower where the cable comes out. theres a spring at the end of the cable and i do not know where it hooks.

There are four pulleys on your deck. The two larger ones drive the blades, the two smaller ones are idler and tension. The idler is on the left, the tensioner is on the right. On top of the small one on the right, in and forward of the one that drives the right blade, this is the tension pulley. With the deck fully lowered, feel the skinny metal piece that rises out of the middle of it, at the top there is a hole. A bee clip goes in the hole. The spring on the end of the cable hooks over this rod and the clip keeps it in place. Your clip either has broken or become dislodged. Look on the mower deck for it. If you can not find it the clip is very similar in size to the one that holds the cable in place on the back of the deck. If necessary, remove this one and test fit it in the hold above the tensioner pulley and go to the hardware store for a replacement.

If youare unable to locate a replacement, let me know and I will describe for you how to order one.

The cable to activate the blades appears to be frozen. How do I free it or replace it?

Try to spray some WD-40 between the cable and sleeve. Then use some small pliers to gently wiggle the cable, then try to engage the blades again. If this does not work try it 2 or 3 times. Also make sure the belt is tight and that the cable is not broken or frayed, and that there is no debris on top of your cutting deck or trapped in the lever you engage the blades.

If you have to replace it.The front end of the cable is pretty easy and relatively exposed. You can remove it with a pair of pliers,be careful not to stretch any springs attached to the cable. The rear end of the cable is a bit difficult to get too and will take some time, but it is not hard to replace.

I need to tighten belt for the mower deck, how is that done? it is a 2004 craftsman 17.5HP 42 " deck. Can you help me

Each of the pulleys on top of the deck should have tensioners. These tensioners are usually the type which have a bolt for you to tighten while attached to the pulley. While you tighten the bolt, the pulley puts tension on the belt.

Where does the blade brake spring attach on an MTD 42 inch deck with manual PTO? One end connects to the blade brake pivot arm, but the manual is unclear as to where the anchor point is.

the other end goes on the pulley engagement swingarm so when you turn the blades on the spring pulls the blade brake away from the blade pulley so the blade can turn. hope this helps

Replaceing mower deck belt on 20 hp 42 mower model no 917275660. Got the belt on. How do I get the cluch spring back on.

Are you refering to the spring attached to the end of the cable that runs up to the lever on the dash to engage the blades? All you needed to disconnect was that cable on top of the idler arm that's held in place by a 'hairpin' and the left pulley cover to put the belt on.
