Two things come to mind for this problem. First try pushing down firmly on both ends of the black rubber platen roller. Sometimes the black plastic latch on either side may break causing one side of the roller to lift up causing partial print. The other possibility is the ribbon is not lifting correctly. A technician can adjust the ribbon lift. After typing a few letters, take the ribbon out and look at the letters on the ribbon. Are they in the middle of the ribbon or are they at the top or bottom of the ribbon? middle of ribbon is correct.
If it is moving as the hammer is struck, then it's one of two things. Either the hammer is moving too slowly, or the ribbon is moving too quickly. Since this is a rather old machine, it seems more likely things would slow down than speed up. I'd check the hammer solenoid. See if it's dirty, or needs lubricated.
I wish I could give you more advice on this, but I am not familiar with this specific model, and was unable to find any kind of service manual, or troubleshooting information for it.
The cartridge just snaps on, printing half letters may be caused by the ribbon being folded over on itself or not moving look at the ribbon toward a light you should see each letter clearly thru the ribbon
Chances are, you didn't installed the ribbon correctly...
A. Open the printer cover B. Use a pin to guide the ribbon between the print head and the ribbon guide, then turn the ribbon tightening knob to help feed the ribbon into place, it shouldn't be twisted or creased. C. Slide the print head from side to side to make sure it moves smoothly
First off make sure the ribbon turns freely.Take off the ribbon and turn the ribbon wheel in the direction of the arrow and see if it turns smoothly. If it turns smoothly the ribbon motor is not moving or the gear is not moving. take off the ribbon and type. See if the black ribbon drive gear on the ribbon deck moves as you type. If not the motor is N.G. or the ribbon gear clutch spring is not grabbing the gear to turn it. Lawrence
