Eton E1 XM-Ready AM/FM Radio Satellite Logo
Posted on Apr 05, 2011

Help please - my E1 has had new chip fitted to sort the display problems and that seems fine now (at extra cost!) my problem is the sticky rubberized finish is starting to break up and looks and feels horrible. Is there any way I can remove this finish?

I just spent almost 3 hours removing the horrible sticky coating on the E1 case. It was getting so sticky I didn't even want to turn the radio on. I bought a small bottle of rubbing alcohol and went to work. Rub and rub a panel at a time, and finally the radio is a pleasure to handle. You can rub over the white lettering and will not damage the letters or logos. I even rubbed the speaker grille which also was very sticky. There are still a few small sticky hard-to-reach places next to the bass and treble knobs but I plan to attack them with a Q-tip. Overall this was worth the time spent.

One owner on eham.com remarked that he soaked the cabinet in rubbing alcohol, after opening the unit and removing the pc boards. Whatever chemical is effective I believe the lettering would be destroyed.

I broke a needle and it ended up under the bobbin

I would do everything possible to get the broken piece out now, as opposed to having bigger problems later. Get a fine pair of tweezers, a magnet of some sort that might fit into the area and try to dislodge the broken piece. If you can not find a magnet that would fit, perhaps working with the tweezers and a Q Tip might help you to remove it, or even a Q Tip with the cotton removed and a sticky material on the end like gum or even a small amount of toothpaste. What ever you use, you should try and remove it now.

Water softener is inoperative and is displaying E1

Usually, an E1 error code means the circuit board is bad. Try unplugging the unit for 5 minutes. Upon plugging it back in, if it does not reset itself, that means you need a new board. It is really easy to replace ( just a few wires) and will cost around $160.

Kyocera Mita FS-1000+ paper slip single page? 5 pages print ok

This is a known problem.
Kyocera pretends to produce very silent printers. Therefore certain sheet metal parts inside the printer have a small piece of sponge rubber at their endings.
Unfortunately over the years this sponge rubber gets sticky. The corresponding lever, that is covered at its end with sponge rubber, sticks too long to its initial position. This is the reason why a certain lever is moved too late by the electromagnet into the position where a certain pulley is released.

As a result printing and paper movement are no longer coordinated and the printout is too low on the sheet.

Solution: Get rid of the sponge rubber, clean the lever very well in order to avoid it from sticking in its initial position. As a result you will here a much harder metallic noise when the lever moves, but the printout should be o.k.

Rubber band around case got loose, then broken

I had the same problem with my Vista 1 year ago. I tried the contact cement and worked fine for a couple of weeks. I tried another brand of contact cement and had the same problem (the adhesive unsticks from the rubber band). I finally solve the problem cleaning everything (be sure to remove ALL of the adhesive from both gps and rubber band to ensure a good contact between them) and putting some drops of Locktite instant glue on the water protective layer side, and then carefully place the rubber band on its place (don't forget that you have only a few seconds to work with instant glue) . Just be carefull and don't apply adhesive very close to the buttons. It worked for me for more than 11 months....and still working...

Canon MP530 U052 Error

The dreaded U052 error means that the 'chip' fitted to the Cartridge is not responding .. Canon (like all printer mfgs) makes all it's profit from selling Ink .. so they fit these chips to try to prevent you refilling or using a 'compatible' replacement cartridge

You have to move the chip from the Canon cartridge to the 'compatible' and (it seems) the chips are particularly sensitive to static / damage .. many people end up blowing the chips during the swap over .. or even when fitting the original genuine cartridges to a brand new unit for the first time ...

If the unit is brand new, take it back and demand a replacement ... if you have just swapped over the chip onto a compatible cartridge, you can try buying a genuine Canon cartridge (which will have a new chip) = hopefully that will do the trick

NB. I have seen some suggestions that canon's have a 'Service Mode' that allows you to disable the cartridge chip checking and allow you to print no matter what .. however I've never found any details ... perhaps some-one else has the details ??
