Toshiba 62hm95 makes whirring noise and color is distorted

Your color wheel is going out and needs to be replaced. Toshiba does not list a part# for the color wheel. They expect you to have the whole light engine rebuilt. You should be able to find one on ebay. Or other sites like that. Good luck to you.

Buy a cheaper color wheel !

Sorry, the color wheel is only available in the Light Engine Assembly. You can not purchase it as a single part. You will have to purchase the engine and replace it to repair your TV. PN: 23405476 it runs about $450 with a $200 core. You may find it cheaper... I don't think it is readily available... Best of luck to you, I hope this was helpful.

We have just got Toshiba projection tv tw40x81 from a friend and the colors are not sharp and pinky looking. Why is that? How to fix that?

That sounds like it could be a color wheel. The color wheel controls the color on your picture since the DMD chip only creates a gray scale picture. You'll need to do a little more trouble shooting. Color wheels can cost around $100. They can be replaced on your own, but it's kind of a pain to get to.

I heard a pop and now the projector only shows black and white.

The color wheel has failed in youtr projector. There are 4 pieces of glass in the color wheel which fit togeter in a "pie" formation and they are red, blue, yellow & clear. This wheel is spun by a motor. The glass is glued to the motor's hub, and, when it fails the glass segments are thown off the hub. This gives you a B&W picture because all of the light is allowed to shine through the optics all of the time. Replace the color wheel with Toshiba part no: 23125963. It will be about $65. No soldering is involved, just use care with the ribbon cable to the motor. You will need a no. 2 phillips screwdriver and a set of jeweles screwdrivers to do this.
