To restore the watch back to it's original condition it will be very expensive, this kind of work is usually done at the factory because it will need extensive parts replacement. My advice would be abandon the idea because of cost, but! if you feel going that route take it back to the store where you purchased it from to see if the work can be done. Some manufactures stop providing parts after a few years making it impossible to remedy the situation.

I can't set the date on my watch - right now I have to scroll through the time setting mechanism hour by hour and day by day?

The date changes around midnight and you can usually advance the date by going past midnight until the date changes and then turning the watch backward to a time shortly before midnight and then winding it forward again.

How far back you need to go you will have to find by experiment but it should not be very far.

Vintage 1940. Doesn't run. Numbers on back of case illegible. Dirty, but intact. What have I got?

It might be worth having the back of the watch removed to see if there is anything engraved on the movement.

You might find that cleaning the watch gets is going, although the advice of the watch repairer should be asked for on this, as it might be very worn and in need of new parts which are unlikely to be available.

If it works and there is information on the movement, you might be able to get some information on the watch from the maker. Visit their web site (www.jaeger-lecoultre.com/) and make an inquiry, giving them all the information that you have.

An interesting problem!

Good luck.

Hello. I just bought an Oris Williams automatic watch on EBay. I was able to get it started and adjust the day/date but it stopped overnight and now it will not re-start. I tried moving the watch around...

I presume they told you on E-Bay that the watch ran ok. If it was mis-representitive that's another story that you probably have some recourse through E-Bay to return and get you money back. If you are stuck with the watch, then it may just need a good cleaning by a reputible watch maker/repairperson. You can also purchase some rather inexpensive watch winding machines to keep the watch wound if you don't wear it all the time. Hope you get it working, Good Luck

Breitling problem

This usually occur when the hairspring is disturbed ( some grease, dust particle, etc). Can be magnetized as well.
You need to find your nearest watch repairer and ask to overhaul your watch. After that it will run like new.
