I can't get the yellow wire of the dimmer slider to work properly using a conventional 3way switch on the other side. I do have the slider on the load box. Could it be that i need a Lightolier ZPR-3 on the other box?

The other switch should only be changing from one wire being hot when it is in the up position to a second wire being hot when it is in the down position. Then the new dimmer should be hot on one terminal when the other switch is up and on a different terminal when it is down.
I'm not sure how the Leviton dimmer works, though.

The remaining 3-way switch needs a jumper wire.
See if your instruction manual shows the same thing as image below.
Let's go through this.
The yellow wire connects to a traveler ... and that traveler connects to one of the brass screws on 3-way switch.
The black wire from Motion sensor also connects to a traveler wire ... BUT you have to identify which traveler wire and which brass screw that traveler wire connects to. And then, put a jumper wire (a short piece of wire) from that brass screw to the dark-colored screw.
I think that will do it.

Some of these electronic devices are reversed when two of their wires are connected together.
That's what the jumper wire is doing. So the 3-way switch is just connecting and disconnecting the black and yellow wires, and that action reverses the circuit in the motion device.

If you are replacing a three way switch with a three way switch, you should only use the wires that were connected to the old switch. (Unfortunately the color coding of these wires is not universal.) Assuming you have only 2 switches, that means you only need to connect 3 wires to the switch (in addition to the ground). One wire (to be connected alone on either side of the top or bottom of the switch) either comes from the electric panel or goes to the light fixture. The other two wires (both at the top or bottom of the switch) are the "travelers" and go directly to the other switch. You can examine the other switch (the one you aren't working on) to confirm which two wires are your travelers. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Black hot wire connects to the black wire of the dimmer. the outgoing black wire will connect to the yellow wire located on the same side as the ground wire. the other yellow wire will cap off.

To add a second switch to control an existing light, you need to get a 3wire cable between the two switches, Thats red, black, white, green wires in the cable. Then you would have to use two 3way switches to make it work. I posted a "tip" on how to wire the 3way switches ..

In general practice, you can only install ONE 3-way dimmer switch to control the lights. If you use two regular 3-way dimmer switches, the circuit won't work.

However, newer technology allows for double 3-way dimming from different locations. See this article about how to do this:

you need 2- 3way switches to work properly, on the one side of the switch there are 2 screw terminals and your "traveler wire pair" are connected here,then on the same switch with only 1 terminal on that side the hot phase hooks to one switch and the other switch has the light and neutral hook to this switch

yes if it is a 3way dimmer. but i don't think that is a 3way dimmer

if you have removed the wires from the old switch it is a little tricky finding which wire is which. If you can't track it down with a meter then just keep trying various combinations until it works. The store doesn't know what they are talking about. And I can't believe they told you to just keep switching wires. Hitting the wrong wires is an easy way to short the dimmer switch out. Take it back and go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy the same type switch you took out.
