Trying to wire a 3
ok typicaly the white wire is your nuteral and the red and black are your travelers so at the spot where you are installing the switch there should be either a set of wires either a switch leg or power set either way looking at the new switch you will notice that one of the screws on it are different then the others the two that are the same are where you want the red/and black to go from your set with the blk/red/wht/grnd the other set should be blk/wht/grnd the whites go together and the grounds go toghter and the black wires if more than one need to be tied together and pigtailed so only one is left and if just one blk that goes to the odd color screw hope this isnt to long winded
I have a Cooper 7503W-Box
The other two are travelers and if the circuit was previously hooked up correctly you can connect the white and red to either screw.
I am replacing a 3
There is no universal convention on the color coding of wires for three-way switches, other than green always being ground. Fortunately if you wire it wrong you won't hurt anything, it just won't work right. Two wires are "travelers", they run between one three-way switch and the other. The "travelers" were attached to opposite sides of one end of your old switch. From your description, one is red and one is black. (These two wires are interchangeable, except that in one position both toggles up or both down would ON. In the other position one toggle up and the other down would be ON.) The "third wire" was attached to the other end of the old switch and is black. If you can't tell by just looking at it which lead of the new switch is alone at one end of the new switch (and is therefore mate for the "third wire"), you can just try the combinations. Assuming you still know which black wire is your "third wire" there will only be 3 combos.
I am trying to wire my 3 way cooper switch and
you need 2- 3way switches to work properly, on the one side of the switch there are 2 screw terminals and your "traveler wire pair" are connected here, then on the same switch with only 1 terminal on that side the hot phase hooks to one switch and the other switch has the light and neutral hook to this switch
