After charging battery, when I press start, it attempts to start and then immediately shuts down. After recharging the battery a while, and attempting restart, the same thing happens again.

Hi

Have you tried to use your computer when power charger is connected to power supply? Then try it to check if your computer does not shut down. If do not shut down it self. You had problem with the battery or with charger not compatible with the battery. Normal problem of shutting down computer is that your battery have no charge, your battery is not compatible with your laptop or ever defective. Tr

Same thing happens whether plugged into power or not.

I believe that problem is the charger, try another charger and it will work again.

If still not working, i suggest you reinstall your operating system and maybe it is corrupted and prevent you to boot up and shut it down. If your computer does not accept formating. Then surely the problem is your hard disk drive it damaged and needs to be replace with new HDD.

Acer Aspire 2920 won't turn on, although plugged in with battery

First of all, what I'm about to tell you are general troubleshooting techniques - I make no claim that they will fix what you describe, but they may help lead you to a solution.
  1. Unplug the AC adapter and remove the battery
  2. Plug in the AC adapter and attempt to power on the laptop
  3. If it doesn't power on, see #6 below. If it does power on, but doesn't boot the OS, restart - pressing [SPACE] as the first Windows splash screen appears. When prompted, choose to delete the hibernation file and start a system boot.
  4. Shut the system down, disconnect the AC adapter, reinsert the battery, and attempt to power the laptop. If it doesn't start we know, at the very least, there's a battery problem.
  5. Plug in the AC adapter. If it shuts down immediately, or won't power back on after a shutdown. . .
  6. . . .there's a problem with the system board, probably the ciruitry associated with charging the battery.
I hope you 'see the light'. Good Luck!

I press the power button, the screen appears, 2 secondes later, it shuts down.

If the battery is depleted and it's not in a powered mount, that will happen. Recharge the unit via the USB cable if necessary and make sure the battery is charged at least 4 hours before re-attempting.

Startup shutdown

a new battery tried yet, battery tests , with a volt meter
only show if cells are shorted, or low charge state (SOC)
only load tests on battery show weak cells.
the top failure on something like this is the battery.
unless dropped.(and any fail possible)
HP has a real forum. why not ask there.
but battery, is top suspect
