Burning smell from motor...what needs replaced?

There's a burning smell coming from the canister, and the motor's speed sometimes drops. I'd like to buy a replacement part and fix it, but I'm not sure what went bad. Brushes, maybe?

Without the complete model number, I don't know for sure what componets you have, most likely is the motor. You will have to take the motor cover off and check it out. You can go to sears.com, click on parts, enter your complete model number, scroll down to cannister and it will bring up a parts list where you can order parts, also a diagram of the cannister.

Burning smell

The response by Lynnette is in reference to the power nozzle....if you are having this issue with the main unit, then it could be the armature is starting to go bad. Have your Rainbow in front of you and give us a call. We can walk you through some steps to narrow it down.

Work well but smell like a burning belt

If it smells like burning rubber, the belt is probably worn and slipping. If it's another burning smell, your motor windings are probably shorting and will burn out soon

Burning smell from motor

Hi,
Check your filter and also check that nothing got pulled into the motor...otherwise the motor is burning up and will need to be replaced... probably cheaper to replace the whole vacuum..

Wet vac motor making noise and smells like burning

Hi I would suggest that the burning smell and the noise will mean that the motor is burnt out. You can get them pretty cheaply from the internet and they are quite easy to fit.

The motor makes a weird sound and starts to heat and smell like something is burning

If the motor sounds scratchy and is making a burning smell, or sparking you will need to replace the motor or the entire vac. Carbon brushes will rarely fix this as it is a high RPM motor

Our vacuum smells like burning rubber. Does it

Burning rubber smell means the brush belt need attention. Make sure the brush is turning freely and replace the belt

Motor slows down and makes burning smell

If the noise is coming from the canister motor, you probably have bad motor bushings. I had the same problem, replaced the motor and all was fine - only for one year. The problem is back and is due to the fact the motor is very high speed (to get good suction) and should be made with bearings, not bushings. I will not be repairing a second time as a $70 motor annually is a bit pricey, and yes it will get VERY hot. I will buy a new vacuum - not another Kenmore.

Burning smell kenmore canister

Had a burning smell coming from the vacuum. Opened it up and noticed sparks in the motor area. Ordered a new motor from Sears and replaced it. Works great now.

Burning Smell

Check the carbon motor brushes, there might be arcing on the armature. New brushes may help if the armature is ok.
