Erratic timekeeping

Two options.

Option 1) If you are using it to control a motor, heater or fluroescent light (even a new compact fluorescent light) it may not work well. These are meant for turning on/off old fashioned light bulbs.

Option 2) As these old mechanical timers age, the plastic gears inside starts to stick a bit. You can try to lubricate with some silicon spray. Don't use oil because that will swell the plastic and really make everything bind.

You can also find some nice digital models for about $12. Some even ask you for a date so they can adjust for changing dawn/dusk times (very nice features). I have mine come on at dusk and turn off at 11pm every night. It even lets us randomize the 11pm so it turns off between 10:30 and 11:30 so I don't look too predictable.

Please rate me.

This is a mechanical timer. The clock runs, but the timer never turns on the pump.

If the clock runs, the only thing left is the switches - and trippers.

If you can power up the pump by manually moving the switch from OFF to ON, that means the switches are good. The trippers are likely going to be the problem.

This timer needs white (or bright metal) "ON" trippers and black "OFF" trippers to turn the pump on and off at the times you select. The picture below shows a white ON tripper at 3PM (between 2 and 4) and a black OFF tripper at 11PM (between 10 and 12). This timer turns the load on at 3PM for eight hours and shuts it off at 11PM. You must have BOTH color trippers to turn ON and OFF. The trippers should be seated fully against the edge of the timer disc, and the screw tightened fully by hand.

More below the picture.

The timer has 96 on or off settings i set 1 pin to come on at 5pm and another to go off at 11pm. it goes on for a couple minutes then go off the only way it stays on is manually turning it on.

I don't know what timer you have, but I think you have to push all the pins in for the duration of time you want your device to operate. Push in all the pins between 5pm and 11pm.

You posted under the Woods 7-day timer 59018 or 59028.
Here is the manual:
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Woods-59018-59028.pdf

There are several programmable timers today that look like Woods, and each brand has different programming.

If you do not have Woods, add a comment and I will walk through programming your brand

1) You have the clock set correctly which implies the wiring is correct. Good job!
2) Programming review:
Each program requires ON time to be set, and then OFF time to be set
For example you set Program1 ON 5:00PM for ALL days.
And then you set Program1 OFF 11PM for ALL days.

3) Programming steps:
Press PROG button until Timer 1 ON appears on display
Use Hour button to set 5 PM
Use MIN button to set :00
Default selects ALL days
(If you want other days, press DAY button until display shows correct block of days)
Press PROG button again to save Program1 ON

4) Now for Program1 OFF

5) To set Program1 Off
Press PROG button until Timer 1 OFF shows in display.
Use Hour button to set 11 PM
Use MIN button to set :00
Default selects ALL days
(If you want other days, press DAY button until display shows correct block of days)
Press PROG button again to save Program1 OFF

6) Program 1ON and Program1 OFF have been set ... so press the CLOCK button to return to current time.
If you want to set another program, press PROG button until Timer 2 ON displays

7) After setting programs, press Clock button so current time shows.

8) The manual shows one more thing ... if you program the timer during the hours 5-11pm, and the timer should be ON during those hours, you have to 'tell' the timer to turn ON by pressing the manual override ... after that the timer will operate normally.

Intermatic EH10: I can't figure out how to set a schedule of Sun - Thurs, 8am on, 10pm off and Fri & Sat, 8am on, 11pm off. I tried every day of the week 8am on, 10pm off and Fri & Sat 8am on, 11pm...

http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/eh10-manual.pdf

The EH10 is 120V digital timer.
The timer offers the following days:
-All 7 days
-Monday thru Friday
-Saturday and Sunday
-Each individual day
-Blankday (day skipper)

If I understand your schedule:
You want
Program1 ON at 8am Sunday
Program1 OFF at 10pm Sunday
Program2 ON at 8am Monday thru Friday (with blankday on Friday)
program2 OFF at 10pm Monday thru Friday (with blankday on Friday)

Program3 ON at 8am Friday
Program3 OFF at 11pm Friday
Program4 ON at 8am Saturday
Program4 OFF at 11pm Saturday

I filled in the chart for you.
I left off the display.
I do not have this timer and don't know 100% how the display looks without buying the timer.
