A whirring sound? Can you tell whether it is coming for the inside of the freezer or underneath the unit? I would suspect one of the fans either blocked by something or starting to go out.

The noise i suspect is coming from one of the 2 fans...if you hear the noise coming from inside the freezer it will be that fan thats noisy and if from down by the compressor that will the fan thats noisy. the part numbers for the fans are

fan in the freezer (evaprator fan) WR60X10185

fan by the compressor (condenser fan) WR60X10220

The area arond where the seals is heated to stop the seal getting damp and mouldy.

I have the exact same problem.
It stopped dispensing water and ice, then it started to make a clicking noise and now the freezer and the refrigerator don't work.

It's interesting that this failure occurred 3 months after the 5 year warranty expiration.

I have the same model, and the exact same problem. Additionally, the compressor/fan for the freezer cycles up and then down (rising and falling noise pitch) at a frequency of about every 5 seconds. The howling is worse at night(!?). It is 4 yrs old and was in the house we just bought. Help quickly, or this is a CraigsList item.

Sorry, no timer. This machine is run by a motherboard which gets it's data from a series of thermistors.
The motherboard is located on the back rear of the machine behind a removable cover.
In the freezer, behind the rear panel, is a main heater located at the bottom of the evap coil.
As well there is a limiter thermostat located on the top of that coil. Either can go bad. To test you need an ohm meter and a decent knowledge of electrical.
2 thermistors are located in the same area. One helps decide when to defrost, and the other is used to control fan motor speed. (simplified).
If you feel comfortable digging that deep, you can start testing, and/or removing suspected parts and taking them to an appliance parts house for testing. The motherboard is very pricey.

the bearings in the motor are going bad. you probably need a new fan motor.

Either the circulating fan has ice forming around it causing the fan to spin out of balance or the fan itself is breaking and needs to be replaced.

It is the control board. There is a recall on certain models and serial #'s that will cover the parts, but not all are covered. do a google search for hotpoint or GE howling noise. you will find out all the info you need.
