K7VT4A-Pro Mobo I'm trying to figure out this RAM configuration. The Manual Says: Memory: 2 DDR DIMM slots: DDR1and DDR2 PC2100 (DDR266) / PC2700 (DDR333) for 2 DDR DIMM slots, Max. 2GB; PC3200 (DDR400) for 1 DDR DIMM slot, Max. 1GB I really want to use the DDR 400, but this doesn't make sense. If I use DDR 400 does it have to be both slots but only equal 1GB instead of 2GB? How can I use DDR 400 on this mother board???

1) Total maximum amount for motherboard is 2GB.

2) There are 2 Ram Memory slots.

3) Maximum amount for EACH ram memory slot is 1GB.

Either DDR Sdram at 266MegaHertz, or 333MHz, or 400MHz.
PC2100, PC2700, and PC3200, respectively.

There is no DDR1 and DDR2 slots, in a manner of speaking.

May be marked on your motherboard that way, but stating it that way on a computer product support website = No.

You're going to make someone think, you don't know what you are talking about.

They may think you are referring to DDR Sdram, and DDR2 Sdram, and they know the motherboard only uses DDR Sdram ram memory.

Suggest state Slot 1 and Slot 2; or DIMM 1 and DIMM 2.

I did some research. You didn't say what density the RAM was, but everything I can find on the Ballistix 800 MHZ DDR2 states that it runs at 2.2V. The standard for DDR2 RAM is 1.8V. You motherboard has both and AUTO and manual setting capability for memory (DRAM) voltage. It is possible that the AUTOP feature is not detecting the need for 2.2V, and that with only one DIMM installled, the memory marginally functions, but with the extra loading of the second it will not. Boot the system with the single DIMM, go to the BIOS, and set the DRAM voltage manually to the 2.01V setting (Verify by the part number of the RAM with the CRUCIAL website that is uses 2.2V before doing this). Once you have changed the voltage in BIOS, shut down and add the second DIMM and see if things improve.

According to their link, it will only support 2GB ram. 1 gb per slot max.

as you can see from the information below there are different requirements for RAM to work stable in your system . Most importand are the RAM VOLTAGE , SPEED , and Configuration of chips. you will need to consult the manual for qualified RAM requirements. Some RAM will work but not very stable. make sure the voltage supplied by your system is enough for the RAM. If you are running DDR RAM in dual channel mode, the ram needs to be the same size also. DIMM modules for the HP computer must meet the following requirements

• The number of pins on the DIMM must match the socket type.
• DDR memory requires a 184-pin slot and 1.8 operating voltage.
• DDR2 memory is not compatible with DDR1 memory and requires a 240-pin slot and 2.5 operating voltage.
• Synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM): Only use DDR type SDRAM memory if the computer came with DDR-SDRAM.
• SO-DIMM modules for the HP computer must meet the following requirements
  • The number of pins on the DIMM must match the socket type.
  • SO-DIMM memory requires a 200-pin slot.

You cannot use DDR and DDR2 ram at the same time, because its always been like that (ie, no SD and DDR, or SD and RIMM)

What you should do is switch to all DDR2 sticks.

No, DDR400 is just DDR RAM. DDR2 is newer RAM and is not compatable with older systems that take DDR RAM. Sorry.
