Network adapter not showing up in device manager

I had cable co. install a new cable internet connection yesterday but when we went to set it up the modem would not automatically detect the tcp/ip address. we looked in the device manager for my Ethernet connection and it was there but it was in the "Unknown" section of my device manager and there was not Network adapter in the device manager. So I hooked up the modem to my old compaq laptop and everything worked fine. When I looked in my device manager it showed the network adapter and my Ethernet connection where is should be. The tech said that I might have deleted a .dll from Microsoft that was not allowing my modem to find the tcp/ip automatically. I know just enough about computers to search and troubleshoot but sometimes i think that if i do too much I will hurt my system and I guess I have succeeded. I have looked all over gateway and microsoft for drivers and help. so I thought I would ask the experts. please help, I can use my new internet connection on my old laptop but I want to use is on my Gateway media center desktop GT4024.

The tech was incorrect - your network adapter is just not recognized by the system. If you install the correct drivers for your particular network adapter it should be recognized, which should then solve your problem. Search the Gateway website for network drivers for your particular desktop, and if the network adapter was added (not built into the computer) then determine the manufacturer and model of your network adapter, then search the manufacturer's website for the correct drivers.

Even easier, if you still have the original disks that came with your computer and/or network adapter, they should include the correct drivers.

Hope this helps!

Look in the BIOS to see if the NIC is disabled. If it is disabled the enable it and install the drivers.

Good day, i am using an inspiron 2200 running windows xp. someone installed a static ip address on my cp and from that day i have been unable to connect to the internet. when i go to network connections...

Well first off know one installed a static IP your internet provider is the one that will do that for you when you get ready to go online if there are numbers in there remove them and select automatically detect settings. Most likely it is a Dynamic IP all you have to do is make sure that you have the driver installed for your card, your internet connection cable hooked up R-45 cable and once all of this is happening and lit your IP will do the rest if not then reboot the router or the modem not sure what you have they will send the proper routing goodies over the line and off you go. You just need to make sure that you are lit on your end and ready to go if for some reason nothing else works then contact your internet service provider and they will come out and make sure that you get set up. Ethernet not working after format and xp reinstall

Right-click the My Computer icon and select Manage, then go to the Device Manager in the list on the left and find the Network Adapter from the list on the right, right-click Network Adapter and select Uninstall. When you reboot, XP should find the Adapter and reinstall it automatically. Another reboot may be required.

If it still will not connect, go to the NIC Manufacturer's website and download the driver to removable media. The Driver Update option can be accessed in the Device Manager, but this time select Properties when you right-click the Network Adapter, and go to the Driver tab.

Gateway 505GR not showing LAN line for internet

assuming it's XP,right click my computer>properties>hardware tab>device manager, then look down list for network adapters, if its there click the '+' sign, then right click on the network adapter and select uninstall.

Restart pc and the network card will be found and the driver automatically installed.

It should now be in network connections, if not reply back

New issue

If you right-click the "unknown" device and select Update Driver, you can force windows to search for the correct driver, and then put in the CD or floppy that came with the network adapter, and tell Windows to look on that CD or floppy. If the installation process didn't work, this might.

General Networking question

lets see here, your NVIDIA thing is for your ethernet port in your computer.

the wireless PCI adapter, is well, a wireless adapter, its used to connect your wireless, and a 1394 Net Adaptor Connection is basically Win2k/XP's way of telling you that you have a Firewire interface installed in your system.

so, if your going wireless, you dont need NVIDIA, and as your device manager shows that it has a red x on it, it shows that its disabled. as for everything else, i wouldent worry about it.

About laptop ethernet...

First figure out whether your hardware is ok and driver is installed properly. In Windows XP, click Start , right-click My Computer , and select Properties .
  1. In Windows 98 and Me, right-click My Computer , and select Properties .
  2. In Windows XP, click the Hardware tab, and then the Device Manager button. In Windows 98 and Me, click the Device Manager tab.
  3. If the Network adapters category is present with a (+) sign , then skip to Step 6. If Network Adapters has a (-) sign , continue to Step 5. Disregard adapters that do not reference an Ethernet Adapter .
  4. If a network adapter is not listed inside, do one of the following items based on the condition of the networking hardware:
    • Networking hardware is not installed. Install a new network card (desktop computer) or a new network PCMCIA card (notebook computer) per the card manufacturers' suggestions. This does not apply to on-board networking hardware.
    • The network card is not seated fully into its socket. For Desktops, remove the side-case, reseat the network card, and replace side case. For notebook computers, remove and reseat the network PCMCIA card. This does not apply to on-board networking hardware.
    • If the computer is older, it may need to have jumpers on the network card set to an IRQ and address range that is not already being used by another device. Remove the side-case, set the jumpers on the card, and replace the side case. Replacing the older network card with a newer Plug and Play network card is probably a better option.
    • For desktop PCs with on-board networking hardware, reset the BIOS:
      1. Restart the PC.
      2. Press F1 repeatedly when the first screens appear.
      3. Press F5 and Enter to reset the BIOS to default settings.
      4. Press F10 and Enter to save the settings and exit BIOS setup .
      5. Restart the PC.
      6. Check Device Manager again for the presence of the Networks adapters category. If the network adapter name is still missing, the on-board network adapter may be damaged. The motherboard should be replaced, or a PCI network adapter should be installed.
  5. If the network adapter is listed, but has a yellow exclamation mark over its icon c00060708.jpg , do one of the following:
    • Software drivers and supportive files may be missing or corrupted. Remove the device from Device Manager and reinstall the software by restarting the computer. See Step 5: Reinstalling network adapter software drivers .
    • If the computer is older, it may need to have jumpers on the network card set to an IRQ and address range that is not already being used by another device. Remove the side-case, set the jumpers on the card, and replace the side case. Replacing the older network card with a newer Plug and Play card is probably a better option.
  6. If the network adapter listed has a green adapter icon c00060709.jpg , the networking adapter is probably functioning correctly. If the PC still cannot connect to the Internet, make sure to complete the following steps before continuing:
    • The cable or DSL hardware may have stopped responding. Reset the cable or DSL hardware using the manufacturer suggestions.
    • There still may be a connection problem. Recheck the cable connections and replace any cables that have been pinched or that you suspect are bad.
    • The Internet Service may be down at your provider. Most Service Providers have a telephone support number. Call the ISP support number. If an outage is occurring, an automated response about system wide service outages will probably play. In this case wait until the service comes back.
If the network adapter icon is listed without problems, and the connections, service, and modem are working properly, then refresh the networking drivers.
Thanks

Hi,
I installed my EUB-362 yesterday. I did install from the supplied CD AND the internet. When I saw that the supplied CD did not include drivers for Vista, I stopped there and then and connected to the internet with my other USB WiFi adapter. I continued with the install. As expected the install wizard said that it could not locate a driver. I let it "search" for the driver and Vista located a driver on MS WEB site and downloaded it. The driver appears to be for a Atheros USB 2.0 Wireless Network Adapter but works just fine.

Ine note: It works OK on a 10 fot USB extension but not on a 20 foot USB extension.

Good luck
