Hook up old tv antenna to converter box

I have no antenna plug on my 30 plus Zenith with a rotary dial. Went to radio shack and purchased a matching transformer for connecting 75 ohm to 300 ohm and a new antenna to replace rabbit ears. I have 4 screws (2 - uhf , 2 - vhf) on the back of the tv. First it was suggest to use the uhf since digital uses higher channels. I never got the language screen, just a lot of snow. I then screwed the adapter to vhf, more snow no language screen. Someone suggested to use another balun so 1 for uhf, 1 for vhf and connect the 2 with a t-splitter to the converter box. We have the same problem with our pre 80's tv. only screws in the back of the tv for the antenna. Only snow when hooked up to the hd converter box following the directions and use of a converter for the antenna hook up from radio shack. Are these tv's just to old to pick up the new signal?
