First, do you have the full-featured version of the software installed (installed on the computer before connecting the printer to the computer)? Second, do you have the all-in-one connected to a print server or USB hub? These can block the two-way communication needed for scanning. Try a direct connection. Also try a new USB cable and a different USB port (if you have any signal loss issues, it matters more with the scanner).
Install software that is twain compliant.
Maybe the HP bundle that came with the printer.
Also Paint Shop Pro,Adobe Acrobat.Photoshop etc.
Use the usb cable after the install of the HP drivers then you may change the default location of where scans are saved.
I had this same problem and it is fixable, but not the way you would probably like, though you can still scan with the printer. You just have to open the Paint program and click from scanner or camera, and then choose your printer and click scan preview, and then scan, it works just fine but its a little time consuming.
