Final Fantasy 8 cant load my ps2 memory card while playing on ps2

So i order final fantasy 8 which is an original playstation game. i pop it in my ps2 and start playing. my ps2 has a PS2 memory card in it. when i go to save points i cant load the memory card says cannot access memory card i believe. i tried both slots and blowing out the card but nothing works. would i need to use a regular playstation one memory card to save final fantasy? plz hlp
