I have an old kenmore sewing machine Model # 385 -1695180. It repeatedly has the same problem: the stitch selector dial does not work and is always set on straight stitching no matter what stitch is actually indicated by the line marking the actual stitch selected. It appears that the dial does not actually move the internal settings at all. I have paid for repairs on this more than once thru Sears and am tired of it. Have oiled the machine as directed in the manual, with no change. I would like to know how to fix this problem myself. Thank you

SOURCE: I have an old kenmore sewing machine Model # 385

Under top of unit there is a cam with different groves, the selector that runs along it is likely stuck and in need of oiling. If when Turing selector you do not see it move, that's the problem. There are 4 screws that hold that mechanism down, it can be removed shaft then oiled, and make sure the sping is also there and working

Zig zag not working on Elna Carina seeing machine

If the zig zag function on your Elna Carina sewing machine is not working, there could be a few possible causes:
  1. Incorrect stitch selector: Make sure you have selected the correct stitch on your machine. Double check that you have selected the zig zag stitch, and not accidentally switched to another stitch.
  2. Incorrect stitch width: The stitch width knob on your machine controls the width of the zig zag stitch. Make sure that the stitch width is not set to zero, as this would prevent the zig zag function from working. Adjust the stitch width to the desired size.
  3. Tension issues: If the thread tension is too tight or too loose, it can affect the zig zag stitch. Check your thread tension to make sure it is set correctly.
  4. Clogged machine: Dust, lint, and debris can accumulate inside your sewing machine and affect its performance. Clean your machine thoroughly, including the bobbin area and the feed dogs.
If none of these solutions work, it may be necessary to have your machine serviced by a professional.

I need to know what the settings need to be on the Kenmore 158 machine to use the buttonholer?

You'll have to provide more information about the sewing machine. 158 indicates the manufacturer. However, there are a lot of Kenmore sewing machines from that manufacturer. The 158.1340 manual is available here: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/150291/Kenmore-1340.html .

Page 40 (41 in the linked format) begins the section on buttonholes. With the buttonhole attachment, you need to set the stitch to the second narrowest zig-zag stitch. You can use any stitch length. The description of using the buttonhole attachment starts on page 45.

Without the buttonhole attachment, you set the stitch selector to each part of the buttonhole as you reach them. The stitch length dial has to be set to an appropriate length in the block for buttonholes. The top and bottom tack bars use the same stitch selector. There are separate ones for the left and right sides of the button hole.

I hope this helps. Please add a comment with the rest of the model number on your sewing machine for specifics with your machine.

Service manual for Kenmore 385 sewing machine

You probably can't, unless you know a repair person who'd be willing to lend you his/hers. http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Kenmore-Parts/Sewing-machine-Parts/Model-3851884180/0582/1210000?pathTaken=&prst=0&shdMod=3851884180 is the parts diagram for this machine.

However, I know of no "string" associated with a stitch selector on any machine, so I'm wondering if you might need a pro to help...

My Kenmore sewing machine model number is 17630, & when I try to set the stitch length from a Straight Stitch setting to a Straight STRETCH Stitch setting, there isn't any difference. I have the length...

Take a look at the stitch length dial. If you turn that dial counter clockwise (to about 7 o'clock), it will set to stretch stitch. Then all of the stretch stitch features will work. When you want to go back to straight stitching, just move that dial back to what ever stitch length you wish.

It sounds like the mechanism and/or the knob are dirty.
Spray some degreaser on the cam stack and behind the knob, blow them out with canned air. IT may take a couple cleanings if old lubricants are sitting there.
