Records on everything else, used to record on -R DVDs (even sony brand dvds) This is true for both rdr vx500's I have
DVD-Rs do work with the RDR-VX500 ...... I had not recorded on mine for a few months after I ran out of the last batch ....... then I tried recording on the newer Sony DVD-Rs I had ...... would not record on DVD-R ..... turns out the instructions say the recorder will not work with any DVDs faster than 8x .... It looks like it's recording but it doesn't ..... then I noticed the newer DVDs were 16x ...... found an old 8x and tried it and it works fine ..... turns out the unit won't record slower on a 16x, it just won't record at all ...... get 8x and you'll be ok
I have experience with on these type DVD recorders.
They will record fine using DVD-RW's automatically; no finalizing is necessary.
On DVD+R, you have to finalize the disc afterwards.
For some reason, I have the same problem with DVD-R's, it would act like it recorded a program, but did nothing when you played it back. I had to get rid of the discs because of the incompatibility issue. So I surmised that DVD-R's do not work with the Sony RDR-VX500.

I had the same issue. Tried the RW DVD and it worked great! I was trying to use -R DVD and they were 1-16X Sony Brand. Thanks for the tip!
