Vehicle idles high for a few minutes, then shuts

The vehicle has been sitting up for about 8 months with a full tank of gas. Once vehicle is started it idles high until it throttles down, then shuts off. It will re-start, but continues to shut off when I downshift or slow down to stop. It will not idle low.

I have a 1991 Honda accord ex..it has been sitting for years now it wont start where should I start I was told that the gas turns to funk after sitting for a long time.

if it is posible for you to drain the the old gasoline out and refill the tank with fresh gasoline that would be great, but if you only have a1/4 tank and draining the tank is not posible fill your tank up with supreme gas not regular the better grade gas with the high octane will dilute the old gas and help burn off the gas when the car starts.if you have more then 1/2 a tank try to pump out the gas with a driil pump, you can buy these a your local hardware store insert hose in filler neck of the tank.you should also remove the spark plugs and with and oil can add 8 good pumps of the can of motor oil in the cylinders do not replace plugs **** with a freshly charged battery turn the engine over few time in 2 or 3 second intervals this will kleen any rust that would have built up on the cylinder walls and also lube up the cylinder wall so that at start up the cylinder wont be dry ,add a few more sqirts of oil between turnovers.Replace spark plug if old ones look bad put spark plug in and start her up its going to smoke a bit at firts **** it will stop after the oil that was put in the cylinders burns off,let the engine idle for 10-15 minutes before putting any strain on motor give it a chance to clean out cylinders burn a few tanks of gas and change gas filter it should be fine.

My 99 cadillac catera has been sitting idle for a few months. I managed to get it started 5 seperate times and noticed it had very little gas. I filled it up to capacity and drove it home. About 2 hours...

It's possible that if the tank was near empty for a while you could have stirred up some contaminants in the gas tank when you filled it up and now the sock on your fuel pump is clogged.

Difficult to start have to keep pumping the gas been sitting 8 m

To stop this from happening in the future, add fuel stabalizer to fuel tank when you store it. Run your car for 10 minutes before shutting it off. It would also be helpful to fog the engine also before storing. You can get fogging oil at any auto supply store. As for your immediate problem try adding carburator cleaner to gas tank.

1991 Jeep Fuel Control Issue

Hey Mudkicker,

Who ever thought of putting an electric fuel pump inside a tank of gas........

Check your other gauges for accuracy. They do that when a ground is loose.

Check the wiring from the fuel tank along the longitudinal frame for frays and shorts. Plugs are secured.

Under the hood, passenger side, check the fuel pump relay. Switch it with one of the others to test it.

Bring the vehicle to an auto parts store. Ask them to break out he code reader. Check for diag codes

99 Taurus wont start unless primed. Fuel pump is working

Check/Change Fuel Filter(s), PVC Valve & Emission Hoses

Gas that sits too long won't fire easily that's why we have to add winterize to our lawn mowers!
Try filling the tank with some high grade fuel cleaner additive. This stuff is like rocket fuel (about $10).
Also add a can of dry gas as you may have a lot of water and water vapor in your system!
Get a couple more cans of starter fluid too. (I always needed at least two to get my diesel running for summer)
Keep spraying and starting (It always took me at least a full can sometimes 2)
When it starts keep the gas pedal down and rev high for a good 5-10 minutes then see if it will idle.
If it still stumbles and falls consider adding another can of fuel system cleaner and/or dry gas.
Don't drain the tank as this usually just makes it worse by letting the bottom sludge stir up.
Never let your gas tank get too low as this will foul up your fuel system and always add fuel cleaner after every oil change (a must for fuel injection and cat. converter care)

Good Luck!
