This is completely normal. The monitor is used for setting menu items, displaying shooting info, and reviewing images. Like SLR have functioned for over fifty years, you take pictures by composing and framing through the viewfinder. Only the most recent dSLRs have the Live View capability which allows you to use the monitor like a point&shoot camera.

Perfectly good photos but image in view finder will not focus Nikon D80 camera

Try adjusting the viewfinder diopter. There's a little dial just to the right of the viewfinder. Turn it while looking through the viewfinder. You want to be looking at an unfocused view or a blank wall. Turn the dial until the focus brackets are sharp. Make sure you do this with your shooting eye.

How to use the monitor as a view finder on nikon d40

The Nikon D40 works as SLRs have worked for half a century, providing a viewfinder for composition and framing. The monitor in the back is for menu settings, shooting parameters, and picture review. Only more recent dSLRs (in Nikon's case, starting with the D3 and D300) provide the LiveView capability.

I can't use the video or view the picture on the screen

The D50 doesn't shoot video. It also doesn't have a Live View mode so you can't preview pictures on the screen. The screen is used for menus and image review.

Nikon D50 -flash won't fire

Try pushing the flash forward just a tiny bit. this model of Nikon has a built in problem with the flash popping up too hard. You can also try to "soften" the pop-up action with your finger instead of just letting it snap up into position.

Focusing problem

Well, stupid me, I didn't realize there is a diopter adjustment button directly to the right of the viewfinder. I would NEVER have known it was there, but after asking my photo-nerd friends all of a sudden the solution was apparent. Still a wasted day of shooting, but hey now I don't have to look like an idiot taking my camera somewhere to be serviced!

Hi, I have a Nikon d50. My skills are very poor and I haven't used the camera in 4months. My problem is the picture veiwer is not on and i need to look thur the veiw rather than looking at the screen. Help

Digital SLR cameras are different from other point and shoot cameras, in that you have to look through the view finder, you can not use the LCD Display to frame your shot.

Hope this helps

No picture in the image screen

I suspect that you're looking for a "live view", like in the point & shoot cameras. Most DSLRs (like the Nikon D50) don't have live view. In other words, in order to see the picture you must take it first.

Display overlaying pictures on LCD screen

Hi, the only thing I can see in the manual is on page 52 (below). You can scroll through the information provided using the up & down arrow keys on the multi-selector button. Scrolling though to the basic file info should give a clearer view. Perhaps if you select this option the next time you view it will default to it? I don't have the camera to try! Please update the question & let us know if the information given was useful to you - Good Luck!

Sigma 170-500mm APO lens on Nikon D50 won't autofocus or shoot

When you get a flashing EE, it means there is an Eror somewhere. Most cameras have a botton you press to reset it. Usually it is the battery check button. Try that. Also try taking the lens off the camera, unlocking the aperture ring, remount the lens and then lock the aprture ring to the minimum F stop. I think this should solve the problem.
