Some audio cd's work better than others. I have experienced some problems with the Maxell brand so I switched brands. It can be quirky. Sometimes you get a bad lot of discs. I have had no problems since that bad lot of discs.

Hello,i have a problem with my Philips CDR 770 CD. .. I purchased lately on the internet 10 CD digital audio VERBATIM,but will not read them ... only reads the Philips digital audio, writable and rewritable, the repurchase ... I hope you can solve my problem ... THANKS
Listen to it. Go out and buy "CD-R for AUDIO" or "CD-Music" blank CD's and it will cooperate. Home CD recorders are designed to reject data CD-R media for recording.
THE PHILLIPS CDR 770 WILL ONLY RECORD ON "MUSIC" CD'S.I USE A MEMOREX MUSIC CD FROM WAL-MART, IT'S A 40X700MB 80 MIN, IT WORKS FINE, HOPE THIS HELPS, GOD BLESS, PAUL
You don't say what the player says when it doesn't record but I imagine you're trying to use standard data CDR's instead od CDR-audio discs. Consumer CD recorders need CDR-A's or else they won't record.
If that's not the answer you really need to provide some more details - like a usable product identifier.
The disc you need to use to record is "PHILIPS CDR MUSIC". That is what it should day on the top of the disc. On the left side of the disc, it should say "DIGITAL AUDIO RECORDABLE". I spent a lot of money buying the wrong discs before finally finding the correct one. So I know your frustration!
Both previous suggestions are wrong. Your machine displays 'wrong disc' as you are trying to use a computer grade CDR, this machine needs a 'consumer audio' grade cdr that are more expensive. Google the manual, it explains further.
