An alba digital voice recorder, model ET858,interviews show on PC but cannot access or play them...HELP

Did any of the files ever playback with sound? You can record sounds, but that doesn't mean the recorder is picking them up. A bad connection, level control setting could be wrong.
Try to do another short recording. If you are using a microphone pull the jack out during recording and put it back in again. Then listen to the recording. If there is sound when the microphone is in and it goes when it is out, then there is a possibility that somehow you recorded the other stuff with no connection and that's why there is no sound. If there is no sound on the new recording at all, then you might have a faulty playback amplifier inside the device.

Since the unit is a mono recorder, the problem is caused by the telephone record adapter you are using.

To delete a file from this dictaphone, scroll to find the file you want to delete then press the down button labelled A-B/X and hold for a few seconds. Screen will then show 001 DEL.. quickly move to press the play button which acts as yes.And... file deleted!

I recently bought this little headache of a dictation machine to help me with my Law revision. Had similar problems but have worked out the following:

The machine appears to have 2 modes of recording - LP and SP. When the machine is in LP mode, it appears to be a format for the machine itself to allow for longer record time. Because of this individual format it will not play back on computers. If, however, you change it to SP mode (from what I can ascertain from the VERY unhelpful user manual is 'high quality recording' i.e. standard WAV format) it saves the file in a .wav format which is playable on computers.

To switch it from LP to SP (this is on my dictation machine only - i take absolutely no responsibility for breakages etc):

Turn on
Press 'M' to cycle to 'REC' mode
Use the Volume control to cycle between SP, SP VOR (no idea what VOR is i'm afriad), LP and LP VOR
Record as usual.

I've made test recordings on both SP and SP VOR and both save to WAV format and can be played back through a computer.

If anyone knows what VOR is then please shout back.

The folder lock can oly be solved by chosing the option "format" in the sub-menu. But please copy the *.dss - files still resting at your card at your harddisk first.
When the recorder finishes the format procedure, all folders will be unlocked again.

The "Read-Only-Failure" will occur again at recorders with differend user profiles, when you put the switched-off recorder into the docking station first and switch the power button to "on". So avoid this constellation!

Be sure you are in the SP record mode and use the dictate conferance setting depending on your environment.
