Panasonic Panafax UF-585 Plain Paper Laser Fax Logo
Anonymous Posted on Jan 24, 2010

We have a telephone/answering machine all-in-one connected to the fax machine. Sometimes (not always) after we answer a telephone calls, the fax machine kicks on after about 45 seconds. The caller can hear the fax tones, we cannot. The calls seems disconnected on our end -- dead air, hear nothing and we cannot be heard by the caller -- but the caller hears fax tones until he/she hangs up. We have fax set at rcv mode: fax/tam. Anyone have an idea about how to fix this.

  • Anonymous Jan 24, 2010

Sorry for the confusion. Our problem occurs when we are having a voice conversation -- no faxes involved. Not trying to send or receive a fax. While we can't receive all telephone calls (for the above reason) our faxes seem to come in and send just fine.

Fax won't answer

If you have an answering machine connected to the same line as your fax:

To make sure the printer picks up incoming faxes, set Auto Answer to On, and then set the printer to pick up after a greater number of rings than the answering machine. For example, if the answering machine picks up calls after four rings, then set the printer to pick up after six rings. This way, the answering machine picks up calls first and your voice calls are received. If the call is a fax, then the printer detects the fax signal on the line and takes over the call.

If you have a voicemail feature associated to the same line as your fax:

Voice mail and fax can share the same telephone line if you subscribe to a distinctive ring service offered by your telephone company. This feature allows you to have multiple telephone numbers on one telephone line. Each telephone number has a designated ring pattern (single ring, double ring, triple ring, or double and triple ring). The different ring patterns let you know which telephone number was dialed, and which device you should use to answer the call.

If you do not have distinctive ring service, then set the printer to receive faxes manually (Auto Answer Off). This setting lets you receive both voice calls and fax calls, but works best if you use voice mail more often. You need to turn off voice mail whenever you are expecting a fax.

I hope this helps.

You need to check the setup ..

The telephone line which is coming from out should be connected to the line 1 of the printer and Telephone answering machine should be connected to Line 2 .

2. You also need to check that after how many rings the Telephone answering machine answers the call you have to keep the "Rings to answer" 2 less than that of Telephone answering machine.

Lets assume that your Telephone Answering Machine answers the call after 4 rings then keep the rings to answer in All in One to 2

How to set Rings to Answer

1. Press the Setup button on the Front panel of the printer

2. Scroll Down and go to Basic Fax Setup - Select it

3. Scroll down and got to - Rings to Answer - Select it

4. Set the Rings here and then try Fax

The model of my AT&T answering machine is 1720...it is linked to a Brother's fax machine...when a call comes in I am not able to pick up the phone and interrupt the message from the answering machine...

Connect the telephone line of the answering machine from the series connection of the facts machine
.Now set the number of rings for the answering machine to activate to the maximum.{This is found on the side of the machine as a reed switch.}
Now when the calls comes in there is enough time for you to allow it to the answering machine or to attend a call or to set it to facts if a document is comming. While you are away you have to decide the priority needed for either facts or answering as it is a commonline. If answering machine has to work set the facts to telephone mode.If facts has to work set it to facts as the machine will activate before the answering machine.

PIXMA MP780 will not receive fax with Verizon DSL connection. Before unit was ok with comcast cable, Note: I'm able to send fax. RBRANT

Solution: Contact local phone company to check the telephone wall jack for low ring voltage.

Ring-in Voltage Facsimile equipment?(fax machines), like other telephone anwering devices, require ring voltage at a telephone jack to answer automatically.? The ring voltage is one of the services provided by the local phone company.
  • Low ring-in voltage can cause short bursts of ring tones at the phone jack.
  • Callers may hear one or two ring back tones and then ringing will stop and nothing else will be heard.
  • Inside the home, the called party will hear a brief ring and then nothing else will be heard. If the telephone handset is lifted, the caller may be on the other end.
To check if the fax will not answer due to low ring-in voltage, do the following:
  1. Disconnect the fax at the telephone wall jack.

  2. If an answering machine is available, connect it directly to the telephone jack. If an answering machine is not available, connect a telephone to the telephone jack.

  3. Dial the fax line and see if the answering machine answers the call, listen for uncommon ring tones inside the home or check for similar symptoms as described above. If any of the above symptoms occur, please contact your local telephone company.

Hooking up a fax machine on home telephone line

Well... the problem is that you are running two machines on one line. ONE of them has to take predominance. Both machines should have settings for "number of rings to answer at". It sounds like you currently have the fax set to less than the answering machine, so the fax picks up after two rings, while your answering machine might be set to more, which it never gets to, because the fax answered the call already(It doesn't matter if you answer the phone, or the fax picks up, once the line is open, the answering machine is taken out of the equation). Even if you set the answering machine to answer first, you're then taking the fax service out of the loop. I'm not sure how you're going to juggle that, since both types of machines each need control over the line to work properly. That's why we (business machine folk) always recommend a dedicated line for fax service.
