This is normal when the Sansa is connected to a computer. You can use it while charging if you connect it to something else. For example, you might have a cell phone with a USB charger that plugs into a wall outlet. You could connect the Sansa to it, and it would let you listen while charging.
There is quite possibly a problem with the USB cable or the USB port on the computer, but try this shortcut force to force the computer to recognize the Mp3 player: Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard
Attention: Resetting the device will delete all the songs..
You can try to reset the device by pressing the power button for about 15 to 20 seconds..if that doesnt work I would recommend you to go to the sandisk site to update the firmware on your device or you can contact sandisk to they can help you with updating the firmware on your device..Please follow the link below to get the firmware http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/Default.aspx?CatID=1376

Try a hard reset.
Press and hold vol + and select for 20 seconds.
If that doesnt work, you can try holding the power button for 30 seconds.
Try to restart after either trial.
If that doesnt work, you can call support and they can troubleshoot it for you.

Best of Luck.
Does it indicate that it is fully charged? If it does, I would return it or have it replaced. You have a 1 year warranty from SanDisk.

If not, try using a different USB port on the computer, preferably one in the back.
Best of Luck.
