play and record button not working

  • Bojo 155 Feb 24, 2009

I am having intermittent problems with the play, stop, fast forward, rewind buttons. Right now its the play button. When it malfunctions the stop and other buttons work fine, but when the stop button fails, the play button works fine. Very frustrating! I have to push the darn thing 20 or 30 times sometimes to get it to respond. Other times one push is all that is needed.

When I started having problems with the transport the advice I was getting was to blast them with compressed air. Tried that and it worked. Seems the cat was climbing on top of the 2488 at might with muddy paws. The dirt was getting down between the buttons. I invested in a cover and haven't had the problem since (also locked the cat out of the room).

I have the same problem with all three of my Tascam 2488 MKII's.
It's a software problem and starts to show up when the harddisk gets full.

Backup your song files ( something you have to do anyway ) and then reformat the entire hard disk.
Then restore the songs you were working on lately.

Before doing this rather huge task, you can copy your latest song to another partition and go on with this copy.
This is only a provisional solution.

Hope this helps !
Best regards

On my Tascam 2488, the Stop, Play and Record buttons have been getting harder and harder to press and activate. Today I can't get them working at all no matter how hard I press. I opened the unit up, but...

I got the same problem. Also, the headphone jack on my Tascam 2488 is going bad. Only the right headphone will work most of the time. Anyone know a remedy/ solution for this?

Having problems recording and playing back tascam dc-02 cf

I'm assuming you are plugging the left and right outputs from the karaoke machine into input A and B of the Tascam to record the stereo output of the Karioke. The Tascam works with mono only (you recreate the stereo mix at mixdown or when bouncing mono tracks together with the panning set). Therefore you should be assigning inputs A and B separately. You could press assign A and then the record button above track 1 and then press assign B and the record button above track 2. Then arm tracks 1 and 2 (by pressing record above each). When you then press play and record together you'll record input A onto track 1 and input B onto track 2.

Hope this helps.

Recording midi player

Yes. You can record the midi output to a track using bounce mode.

With you midi (or smf) file loaded into the midi tone generator,
press shift-bounce to enter bounce mode. Then arm a track for recording. Turn the fader up for that track, the master fader and the fader for the midi tone generator. Make sure than all other track faders are down or the tracks are muted (or empty) and press play and record. The midi song will be recorded to the track in real time. Just press 'stop' when done and exit bounce mode (by pressing the bounce button again).

Tascam 2488

Hi,

You'd plug the XLR connection into any of the first four inputs on the 2488 (labelled a to d). This is a dynamic mic so you don't need phantom power and should make sure your phantom power switch is off (out) on the 2488. You'd then assign the input you've chosen to a track, arm the track for recording, turn up the input level for that input to test the signal level, and record away by pressing record and play together.

Hope this helps.

Is there any way to record Tascam 2488 Multieffects directly to the hard drive when I record? When I change tracks during playback, the previous effect that I used disappears...Please help???

Yes. Rather than pressing the track SELECT button to assign the effect, press one of the SOURCE buttons to the left of the EFFECTS. This will record the effect HARD to the track as oopposed to SOFT. SOFT being that the effect will NOT be recorded whereas HARD means it IS recorded and will be there anytime you play the track. NOTE: Just make sure that's the effect you want as it is then part of the track.

Tascam 2488 Portastudio

To record the eight inputs onto 8 separate tracks at once simply plug your mics or other audio sources into the mic inputs (only 4 can be powered, A-E) and then assign each input to a separate track by pressing the input button which corresponds to one input and then the select button for the desired target track at the same time. Do this for all eight inputs and their target tracks. Then arm all eight tracks to record by pressing the record buttons on each (the red lights will come on). Then when you press play and record in the transport section (or use punch operations) you will record all eight inputs to all eight tracks at the same time.

Good luck.

Don't know how to Pre-Master or Burn to CD, please help me!

Don Q -

This answer assumes you have the 2488 mkI and not the newer mkII because the process may differ slightly on the mkII.

To premaster you first have to set an out point for the end of your pre-master (the start point is always zero). Go to the 'Audio CD' menu item and choose 'pre-master' under that. You'll see the word 'mastering' appear in the top left of the screen to let you know you've entered mastering mode. Make sure you have the tracks unmuted that you want to mix into the pre-master and have all of your eq, panning, etc set the way you want. Then hit record and play. The pre-master records to a stereo pair of dedicated internal tracks. You can redo the premaster as many times as you like which will overwrite those internal premaster tracks. You can clone the premastered tracks to a stereo pair of tracks, export them as waves or burn them to a CDR.

fnawesomewes - You have to press record and play to record your premaster.

2488 to pro tools

There is no way to 'sync' with protools from the 2488. In order to use your 2488 tracks in protools you have to first export your tracks as wav files and move them to your computer via usb and then import them into protools.

To get Protools files into your Tascam 2488 you'll have to export your Protools files into mono wav files first. They must also have a sampling rate of 44.1KHz and can be either 16 or 24 bit. Then load these files into your 2488 via usb and import them into tracks on the 2488.
