Leeson Reversible Electric Motor 3/4 HP Logo
Posted on Dec 21, 2009

I have a 3/4 HP motor installed on my porch chairlift that has stopped working. The motor only hums when you push the up or down button. After removing the motor it spins freely and will run but has no balls at all. It's not running to full speed and I can stop it with my hand. Do you think the problem is with the run capacitor?Paul M.

It is possible that the start/run winding is open cicuit or cable connections via the capacitor you mentioned , is it distorted , any sign or leakage . as it is on a stair lift the motor has to be reversed , is the reversing switch intact.

The motor tries to start with a low hum, but it will not power up. The blades turn easily and the reset button is not out.

If blades rotate freely, then there is no stoppage.
If motor hums, then circuit and switch are good.
If motor will not start, and reset is not tripped, then disposal has gone bad.

Motors slow down and overheat, and then they stop working.
Each time you hear motor humming instead of rotating, the motor is overheating.
All motors stop working some time.

There are no repair parts for disposals.
Drain is not clogged, so sink is usable until disposal is replaced.

I wrote EZ disposal-replacement steps from years when I worked apartment maintenance.

Also take advantage of fixya phone service.
For a price, expert speaks with you over phone while you work on disposal or any do-it-yourself project.
Fixya is always less expensive than a service call.

Dryer does not start when I push the on button the motor hums.

If the motor continues to hum afteer letting go of the button, then it is likely a broken drum belt. If the motor hums but stops when you let go of the button, something is preventing it from turning. This could be a seized motor or a drum that is stuck, or something caught in the fan blade.

Door will not move up or down, the drive motor just hums.

On the inside of the motor box, check to make sure the chain has not come off the gear.

Start problem

Hi,If you hear the hum while you are pushing the start button and when you let off the button the hum stops, you have a notor going bad.
If you can get someone to help you, open the door, hold the door switch in, while someone else holds the start button, you try and turn the drum with your other hand. Sometimes the motor will start but, this only confirms the motor is bad and needs replaced. I hope this helps.

Thanks

Push start and motor hums, but nothing else works.

Hi, If you release the start button, does the hum stop? It sounds like hte start winding in the motor is bad. You can try and start it manualy by truning the timer on, open the door so that you can turn the drum with your hand. You will need anoth person there so that one of you can hold the door switch button in and the other push the start button. While pushing the start button, try turning the tub and see if it starts. This will give you an idea on the motor bad or not.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need any more assistance.

Thanks
Vic

When start button is pushed, hums but does not run. Drum does not turn. Belt is okay

It sounds like it is the motor or a stuck/obstructed blower wheel. You can start by opening the door, push the door switch in, hit the start button & see if you can turn the drum clockwise by hand. This might get it going. if the drum does not move by hand then the problem is probably within the blower. post your findings for a follow up
