I inadvertently had the power on rather than the "kitchen timer"-about 10 minutes. I switched to the kt, but everything went dead within a minute. Did I kill it?

Wait an hour or so, it may come back on, there are thermostats inside, some of them are self-resetting, some are not. Good luck.

How do you use the kitchen timer and cook at the same time?

If you have the kitchen timer set for instance for 10 minutes and it is counting down, and then you want to reheat you coffee for 2 minutes. You would hit either time cook or reheat button and enter 2 minutes ten hit start. The microwave will heat your coffee and show the 2 minute countdown for that. When done it will revert back to what is left on the 10 minute kitchen timer without missing a beat on most microwaves.

Microwave power turns off after a few sec running incl oven power

I would suggest having whoever installed the new appliances come back and check out his work. There might be a poorly made electrical connection somewhere, and you might have a potential fire hazard.

You might also have gotten a lemon microwave oven. This happens sometimes. (Usually when I buy something.) Contact the store where you purchased it and ask if they have a service person who can check it, or just tell them what's happening and you want a replacement. They'll just return yours to the manufacturer.

In any case, have this checked out to be sure your wiring isn't at fault.

My wife says that she was using the kitchen timer and everything went dead. no lights, no nothing. Any suggestions?

cavity therm is bad probably, some people use the micro as a timer thinking they are using the kitchen timer and it burns out the cavity therm. get a qualified svc company to replace the therm, if it is the therm it wont heat or start or anything, if its just the timer thats not working then i suggest a new clock board.

Went completely dead

I would bet that instead of the kitchen timer's being on, the oven was running on high but empty for that forty minutes.

This would have led to overheating, which would have blown the thermostat on the magnetron.

Hopefully the thermostat did its job protecting the magnetron from damage, but 40 minutes running empty is pretty scary...

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.
