Hi, the Optical and Coaxial inputs are assignable to whichever input you need them on. Plug the Optical cables from your DVD and HD cable box into any of the OPTICAL INPUTS (1 and 2 is fine, but write down your connections on paper)
You will then need to go into the setup of the AVR on the screen and assign the OPTICAL connections to the correct inputs (Probably TV/CAB and DVD.
Use the SYSTEM SETUP button on the factory remote, and you should see the on-screen menu appear on your TV. Go to INPUT ASSIGNMENT and choose the input for the DVD and assign OPTICAL 1 or 2...
Are you connected with video cables to a tv or "monitor" this is more than likely were the setup is visible for speaker configuration, input assignment etc, most denon receivers work this way so I would suspect you need to re-check the video connection until a set-up picture appears.
The best way to use the Denon and get your money's worth is to connect all devices to the Denon using HDMI connects if possible, if you use HDMI make sure you assign the audio if needed.
HDMI from Denon to TV. the Denon will upconvert all signals to HDMI to the TV
HDMI input connect as follows: 1.Connect an HDMI cable from the Cable box to the TV/CBL HDMI input on the Denon. 2.Connect an HDMI cable from the Xbox to the DVD/HDP input on the Denon. 3.Connect an HDMI cable from the HDMI out-put on the Denon to an input on the Samsung. You don’t have to use the optical output from these to devices since the HDMI cable allows for the transfer of both audio and video, if you have them extra use them in addition tothe HDMI cable and last, 4.On front of denon after you setup and assign your optical connections, if you use them, once you select TV/CBL or DVD/HDP as a source, press the input mode button to select auto
FIRST, IF YOUR USING HDMI CONNECTIONS IN THE DENON HDMI SETUP YOU HAVE TO TURN THE AUDIO DELAY ADJ. ON
SECOND, THE DELAY TIME ADJ, FOR OTHER SOURCES IS LOCATED ON PG 27 IN THE MANUAL, HERE IS THE LINK TO DENON SITE WITH MANUAL http://www.ca.denon.com/AVR-588-OM-E_102.pdf
This reciever does not decode the audio through HDMI, the HDMI ports are simply a pass-through. To get audio you need to connect an optical audio cable from the PS3 to the reciever also. I figured this out after 2 hours of trying to get audio from the HDMI cable. Here is a link that shows the different audio formats supported through HDMI by the different Denon models. It looks like the AVR-788 is the lowest model that supports audio through HDMI. Hope that helps.
the avr-588 apparently cannot carry sound via hdmi - don't know why; just what i found out from the geek squad at best buy; solved the problem by connecting optical cable from cable box to receiver; be sure to change the input on the receiver for opt-2 (system setup >2 inputs) to correlate with tv
