Windows Live Mail Junk filter problem

Windows Live Mail keeps putting messages from myself into Junk despite the fact I've clicked to set my name and my domain name as safe. And I've added my email address to ''contacts'' in a desperate attempt to foil it. Any suggestions how to stop it?

I've already done the first suggestion as my email indicates. The 2nd one looks complicated and just for Outlook, not Windows Mail.

  • Anonymous Oct 19, 2009

As my email indicated, I had already tried the first suggestion. The 2nd suggestion with the link seems to suggest I can turn off the junk controls altogether but I have already checked "No automatic filtering" in Windows Mail and it still filters everything. Also, that link is for Outlook 2003, not Windows Mail. I checked for updates as also suggested and there were none.

There are two important steps you should take:

  • When you find email in your junk mail that is not junk, right click on it's line in the list, select Junk E-mail, and Mark as Not Junk. You'll then have the opportunity to add the sender or the address they sent to to a "safe" list so that they'll not be marked as junk in the future.
  • Visit Office Update regularly. One of the things they update is the junk mail filter, and I've seen it improve in accuracy over time.
also you can try this:

WINDOWS MAIL: there is built-in security (not just spam protection). The settings can
be modified inside Windows Live Mail from Tools, Security settings
(might be slightly different - I am in front of a non-US Vista right
now). More information about the protection can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/protect/yoursel...

Yes, you can use your own preferred protection software. The what and how depend on the name and version of that software.

Disabling junk mail filtering by Windows Mail:

        Click on the Tools menu.

        Click on Junk E-mail Options...

Select the option for "No Automatic Filtering."

        Click OK.

To allow Windows Mail to keep filtering junk mail, but exempt mail from Notre Dame senders from being filtered:

        Click on the Tools menu.

        Click on Junk E-mail Options...

Click on the Safe Senders tab.

        Click on the Add... button.

Type "nd.edu" (without quotes) in the box.

        Click OK.

Protect your computer, your information, and your company?s network

10 ways to work more securely

The security of your computer and data is crucial for you and the success of your company. Lost or stolen information can reveal company secrets, or expose your confidential or personal information. The more you do to keep your computer secure, the safer your information will be. Use these 10 tips to learn ways you can help protect your computer, your data, and your company's network.
1. Work with your IT department

Make sure that you install all of the patches and updates that your IT department recommends. In addition to installing Windows and Office updates, your IT department might require you to install additional security software, such as a firewall or custom software to help you connect from remote locations. Making these regular installations will keep your computer and your company's network as secure as possible.

Learn more about ways to manage your computer and devices at work.
2. Use strong passwords

Passwords provide the first line of defense against unauthorized access to your computer, and a good password is often underestimated. Weak passwords provide attackers with easy access to your computer and network. Strong passwords are considerably harder to crack, even with the latest password-cracking software.

A strong password:

*

Is at least eight characters long.
*

Does not contain your user name, real name, or company name.
*

Does not contain a complete dictionary word.
*

Is significantly different from previous passwords. Passwords that change just slightly—such as Password1, Password2, Password3—are not strong.
*

Contains characters from each of the following groups:
o

Uppercase and/or lowercase letters.
o

Numbers
o

Symbols (!,@,#,$,%, etc.)

Learn more about how to create strong passwords.
3. Don't enable the Save Password option

Make it mandatory for you—or someone else trying to access your computer—to enter your password on all operating system or application settings. If a dialog box prompts you about remembering the password, rather then requiring you to enter it, just choose no. Allowing the password to be saved negates having the password at all.
4. Use network file shares instead of local file shares

Rather than opening up your computer to co-workers, use network file shares to collaborate on documents. And restrict access to the network file share to only those who need it. If you're working on a team, you have lots of other options—such as using Microsoft Office Groove 2007 or Microsoft Office SharePoint 2007.
5. Lock your computer when you leave your desk

If you're going to be away from your desk for a while, make sure your computer is locked.

To lock your computer:

1.

On your keyboard, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE at the same time.
2.

Click Lock this computer (Lock Computer if you're running Windows XP).
3.

To unlock your computer, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and enter your password.

6. Use password protection on your screensaver

Sometimes you're away from your desk for longer than you unexpected. Plan for those situations by setting up your computer so that it locks itself after a specified amount of time.
To establish Windows 7 screensaver password protection

7. Encrypt files containing confidential or business critical files

You keep valuable and sensitive data on your computer. You might have sensitive information about your company or clients, or your personal bank statements on a laptop you use at home and work. Encrypting your data keeps it as secure as possible. To help keep unauthorized people from accessing your data—even if your computer is lost or stolen—you should encrypt all sensitive data. In the Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Windows Vista, you can use BitLocker™ Drive Encryption to encrypt the entire volume. In Windows XP and all editions of Windows Vista, you can use the Encrypting File System (EFS) to protect important files. We highly recommend that you learn how to encrypt a file or folder to keep it safe.

8. Don't open questionable e-mails

If an e-mail message just doesn't look right, it probably isn't. Forward the e-mail message to your IT administrator to verify before you open it.
9. Encrypt e-mail messages when appropriate

If you're sending confidential or business-critical information, encrypt the e-mail and any files attached to it. Only recipients who have the private key that matches the public key you used to encrypt the message can read it.

10. Use the Junk E-mail Filter in Outlook

Receiving spam, or junk e-mail messages, isn't just annoying. Some spam can include potentially harmful viruses that can cause damage to your computer and your company's network. The Junk E-mail Filter reduces the amount of junk e-mail messages, or spam, you receive in your Inbox. Good news—if your junk mail filter is already active. But you can always change the settings.

Hotmail not receiving. Enable IMAP How?

Windows Live Mail is the desktop email application of Office Live, introduced with Windows 7. Windows Live Mail replaces Outlook Express in Windows XP and Windows Mail in Windows Vista. You can use Windows Live Mail to access most free email accounts, such as Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo Mail, as well as those offered by Internet service providers. You can also set up your IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) account to use Windows Live Mail.

Open the Office Live email application. Click "Start," select "Programs" or "All Programs" and select "Windows Live Mail" from the "Windows Live Folder." Go to the "Tools" menu and select "Accounts" to open the "Accounts" dialog box. If you do not see thetoolbar, press the "Alt" key to display it. Click the "Add" button, select "Email Account" and click "Next." Type in the complete IMAP email address, such as "[email protected]" into the "Email Address." Enter the password for that account in the "Password" box. Enter the name you want displayed to email recipients in the "Display Name" box. Select the "Manually Configure Server Settings for Email" check box and click "Next." Select "IMAP" in the "My Incoming Mail Server Is" list. Enter "imap.ispname.com" into the "Incoming Server" box, replacing "ispname" with the name of your email provider. Type "smtp.ispname.com" into the "Outgoing Server" box, replacing "ispname" with the name of your email provider. Click "Next" and then click "Finish." Hope this helps.

Microsoft Live Mail desired synchronization can't be maintained.

If you are using Version 2009 (Build 14.0.8064.0206), you should be able to right-click on the folder in the folder pane, select 'Synchronization settings', and select either 'All messages' or 'Headers only' from the list for every folder you wish to modify. Once all of them have been modified to your liking, close Live Mail and reopen it. Your settings should have been saved and should not have reverted to 'All messages.' I have found that if you do not restart the program, it sometimes ignores configuration changes. If you are still using Version 2008 (Build 12.x.xxxx.xxxx), I would recommend visiting http://home.live.com to upgrade to the latest version first.
