DVD-R will not play

3 out of 4 DVD-R discs finalized okay because I finished the whole disc, finalized, then removed them for play on separate DVD player/TV. The 4th disc was partly recorded on, removed and forgot to finalize. I put it back in and the finalize button is no longer available-its greyed-out not working for this disc only. My computer has not played or uploaded it, either. I have a Nero program that I have not used. Will that retrieve it? I first time a bought a 5-pack I bought DVD-RW. My mistake to buy DVD-R. I'll probably switch to DVD RW. 2006 Sony handycam DCRDVD-205

In reply, no help here. 1-you say "finalize" it. It will NOT finalize as I said. I know I was supposed to finalize it. The problem is I did not, then I took it out. I put it back and now finalize choice is no longer available on the LCD screen. 2-you say "or."
Are you guessing? 3-it will not let me go to "edit." The screen always says Disc error
unsupported format for any button I touch-only for this disc. The other 3 finalized just fine. I reset it twice and nothing. I called Sony and they say they cannot help.
    Pls try again.

I just added info to the problem above. I tried to use Nero computer program. But it mostly deals with CDs-not DVDs. I do NOT have a regional incription lock for a MUSIC file. I have an unidentified lock or block from playing back a DVD-R. Who can unblock/open this VIDEO file?

  • dbrm Dec 23, 2007

Thanks for your 2nd reply. I have valuable info on this disc that I just can not lose.
For everything else, I will start over and will be careful to follow steps. Anyone else with some magic to dig into this blocked disc that was not meant to be unblocked?

The DVD disk you have used is a DVD-R disk, that is surely writable, but not re-writable.
Hence as what you have done once, cannot be undone, nor can you make any changes.

You may use another disk (A new one).

You have to finalize or go to edit and then finalize first before taking out. Once done you will have to use new disc.

  • Anonymous Dec 23, 2007

No I was not guessing, I was telling you 2 ways of doing this operation. It sounds like you are trying to save a disc you have already damaged. The answer still is the same you can not! Start over and next time follow steps.

Only other thing I can add is that it has happen to me to, so don't feel bad. But if you can get the unit to play it again, you will need a second unit to record, will be the only way I know of. Hope you get it!

HOW TO FINALIZE THE DVD CASSETE AND CONNECT TO T.V SET?

Finalising a disc enables the disc to be played on any other compatible machine. By doing this it changes the disc format so that you can no longer record to it turning it into a Play Only disc. On your Panasonic DVD Recorder you can record to many (if not all depending on the model) of the following DVD Disc formats to the limit of their capacity over multiple occasions. The disc in question can be played back and recorded to on the DVD Recorder during this time but until it is finalised it will not work on any other machine.
DVD Formats: DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD+R, DVD+RW.
How do I Finalise my disc?
  1. When you have finished the initial recording stop the disc and press the ~FUNCTIONS~button.
  2. Using the ~UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT arrows~ on the keypad select "To Others" and press~ENTER~.
  3. Using the ~UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT arrows~ on the keypad Scroll down to "DISC MANAGEMENT" and press ~ENTER~.
  4. When the disc management screen opens you need to use the ~UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT arrows~ on the keypad to scroll down to "FINALIZE" and press ~ENTER~.
  5. Using the ~UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT arrows~ on the keypad select "YES" and press~ENTER~.
  6. Using the ~UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT arrows~ on the keypad select "START" to begin finalizing the disc, please note by pressing start here you will no longer be able to record or edit the disc being finalized.
Finalizing may take up to 15 minutes.
Do not disconnect the mains power in this time. A message appears when finalizing is finished, press the enter button when this appears. It will now play on other compatible machines.

Windows media player burned a dvd for me now when i tried to play it on my dvd player it wont work what do i do it says disc is not finalized please finalize the disc on the recorder which was used for the...

Most DVD player can't read open session discs, meaning when you burn your DVD movie there's an option there that when your disc is not full you can still add files on it, it's open session, in your case if you want to play it on dvd player you must select the finalize the disc to close the session and you can play it in any dvd player you want.

Make sure that you finalize the disc when recording is finished, also some DVD players prefer DVD +R

I am recording fron VHS to DVD. When I am finished and push the stop button, How can I tell how much space is on the DVD to record something else and how do I finish the dik so it can't be recordered over

JVC DVD Recorder – Finalizing and disc space
First, you will need to know if the program was recorded in XP mode, SP mode, LP mode, or EP mode. To find out how much room there is left, put the dvd in the tray and press the Disc Menu/List button on the JVC remote. This will display the title and how long it is - write that number down. It will also say either "XP,SP, LP, or EP" - write down that mode. In XP mode, a DVD will hold 1 hr and 20 mins worth of prgramming - MAXIMUM. SP mode = 2 hours. LP mode = 4 hours. EP = 6 hours. So, if your program is one hour, and you recorded in LP mode, you have 4 - 1 = 3 hours of space left for recording on that disc.

If you finalize a disc, you will no longer be able to add more programs to that disc, unless the disc is a + or - RW disc. Also note that finalization requires some disc space, so if you recorded a program that is exactly 1hr and 20 mins long, and you recorded it in XP mode, then the disc will probably not finalize correctly.

That being said, the finalization directions are on p. 23 of your manaul: Title --> Finalize --> => --> find finalize --> Enter --> OK --> Enter

Now it will play on other players.

Dvd disc recorded on dvd recorder wont play on any other dvd players

make sure you have 'finalized' the disc.. this prepares the DVD in a special way to be used on other players... without finalization the disc is almost just like an extra disc drive and you can continue adding material until it is full

'Finalize Disc' will be a menu option in your writing software but it may be called something else but whatever it is there should be a little explanation attached to it explaining that it is to 'finish' the disc for use on another player

No disc kicks disc out

I have the problem of it refusing the disc if the door opens before I have filled the whole disc and finalized it. As long as I don't open the door till the disc is full and finalized, it works.

Recorded dvd

You are probably having an issue with the discs rather then what you are trying to play them on.
The discs need to be finalized before they can be used on another player.

  1. Put the disc in the drive (the ones you have already recorded)
  2. Press SETUP on the remote
  3. Select - Disc Edit Press OK
  4. Select - Finalize Press OK
Wait until it is finished then try to play them on another player.

Finalizing both sides

A Dual Layered (DVD-R DL) disc has two recording layers on the same side of the disc. No recording is made on the 'other' side of the disc.

Finalising the disc will finalise both layers. Most probably your computer DVD drive cannot read both layers of the DVD-R DL disc. DVD-R DL discs can only be played back on DVD devices that are compatible with dual layered discs.

Check your computer DVD drive spec to see whether it can read DL discs.

LG RC195 VCR/DVD Recorder

You need to "Finalize" the disc, or it will not play on any other dvd player other than your LG. Finalizing the disc permanently commits any data onto the disc, no more writing or editing can be done.

Finalizing

All units are different but you'll insert the disc to be finalized,
go into your disc menu, edit disc and you should see a finalize disc.

The disc will finalize (this usually takes a few minutes).
You will no longer be able to record on this disc so make sure you are finished with it!
If the disc is not finalized, you will not be able to play it in any DVD player other than the one you recorded it in!

I know it's not step by step but I hope this helps :)
