Not able to record movies/shows from cable box onto dvd recorder

Sorry I can't answer directly but just wanted to suggest you bought a PVR or personal video recorder that uses a computer-type hard drive. These devices are a lot less hassle when only short-term storage is needed and any content you want to keep can be recorded later onto hard copy. I still prefer vhs for that as it is possible to edit tapes or cut out bad portions if something goes wrong - not something easy to do if a cd or dvd gets damaged.

Clean ? Repareable ? Trash ? Sell as is?

The laser pickup assembly is shot, over time the laser becomes weaker until it can no longer read the disc,it is time to retire the item, far cheaper to replace the entire unit.

I have borrowed a JVC

First of all, here is the main ONLINE SUPPORT page for your model:

http://support.jvc.com/consumer/product.jsp?archive=true&pathId=115&modelId=MODL027682

And here is a direct link to the ONLINE USER'S MANUAL for that model:

http://resources.jvc.com/Resources/00/00/93/LPT1133-001A.pdf

To view the Support Page or the Owner's Manual with Operating Instructions just use your mouse to click on the link, which is the underlined and highlighted text just above. This will open a new web browser page automatically for you and allow you to view the information at the website indicated and the contents of the Owner's Manual.

You may need ADOBE READER installed on your computer to read PDF documents. You can download this free at WWW.ADOBE.COM if necessary. Click on the DOWNLOAD ADOBE READER button on right side of the ADOBE home page when you get there, and then just follow the onscreen instructions to install it.

See page 39 of the ONLINE USER'S MANUAL for detailed instructions on how to DUB FROM VCR TO DVD.

Thank you very much and good luck.

I lost the remote control,

There should be a rewind button on the front of the main unit (usually indicated by either REW or 2 arrows pointing to the left), this should be next to the fast forward (again indicated by either F-FWD or 2 arrows pointing to the right) as well as PLAY and STOP - for the VCR. The only thing you would need the remote for is to set the clock and/or perform setup for the DVD player as well as timer recording. Try a universal remote which will make fast forward, play, stop, record (to VHS) and rewind easier.

I HAVE A JVC DR-MV7

Hi,
Actually your DR-MV7 has set on Progressive Scan mode, turn it off to get its normal picture or hook it in Component Video input of tv to get its progressive scan mode picture.
And if it is already hooked in component video input of tv then check picture resolution of your tv that seems set on 480, please change it to 720p to watch dvd player correct picture.
Hope this info will help you.
Thanks.

Our DVD will not read discs. Some that we bought

I'm assuming you bought the DVD recorder in Asia as well. US DVDs are region 1 and won't play on a player/recorder from another region without alteration. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvd_regions for a description of DVD regions). There's nothing as simple as a switch unfortunately.

You may be able to find a way of altering your recorder to play all regions (region-free) but you need to be careful when doing this. Here is one person's story of this going wrong with the same model JVC.

A safer alternative may be to buy another recorder in the USA.

My jvc dvd /vcr combo will not record

From the explanation, it looks like you are trying to record TV channel, correct? Some of these DVD VCR combos may not have built-in tuner. Do you have the instruction book? If not, you can download from jvc.com website. If you find it difficult, tell me the model number.
