Canon knowingly disabled Windows 7 support for all of the old products in 2009. You need a pre-Vista CanoScan toolbox version 4.1.3.5, it will work fine in Windows 7. I uploaded a copy on my website rust.mine.nu.

I have many years experience repairing Canon scanners so here is my suggestion for you.

My suggestion is this, I would google Canon Canoscan 500f drivers, just as I have written it to you. A page will pop up and download the latest drivers from Canon's official web site ( the drivers are dated). Before you install the drivers disconnect the cable from the scanner to the computer. Now install the drivers. Once they are installed reconnect the cable from the scanner to your computer with the scanner powered on. A window will pop up saying a new device or drivers are being installed.Once this is completed then reboot (restart) your computer and you should be able to scan again.

You can download your drivers directly from Canon.On the link page scroll down in the OS select box and you'll find Vista.Just select that and your drivers will come up.

Try that vista driver. I tried some vista drivers for some devices and they worked for me :)

Sorry to inform you, but there are no Vista x64 drivers for that product, according to Canon's website.

There are Vista drivers for the 5000F available here. Be sure and download both the driver and the Toolbox (listed under Software).

Are there any other words along with the error?

Make sure the scanner is unlocked.
Does the scanner make any noise when you attempt to scan?

If possible, try the scanner on another computer.

Was the scanner working before?
What OS are you using?

Download the delete driver application and uninstall the drivers. Also, download the most current drivers and reinstall. You should also download and install the most current version of Toolbox.
