One way around is to install Mac Drive on your system. First you format your hdd in HFS+ on a mac platform, with any size you want. Then, after you installed Mac drive on your PC, it will work.

You can not use the drive on both systems. It has to be formatted for one or the other. To transfer your files, I would either backup your files to CD's/DVD's or try to network your Mac and PC, then just dump your files to a share folder of some sort.

How simpletech hard drives work on apple computers

Simpletech hard drives should work fine on Apple computers. I'd suggest you erase the Simpletech hard drive first with the "Disk Utilities" application using the "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" format before using the hard drive.

I have a Maxtor 9NX2DT-500 hard drive for my PC can I copy my File on a Mac Air computer ( is it compatible ?)

Depends on what you want to do with the files. Data is usually interchangeable between Mac and PC file formats. FAT-32 format files are limited to 4gb in size. You cannot boot a Mac from one of these files or from a drive formatted to FAT-32. To be bootable, an Intel Mac system drive must be formatted as a GUID partition map. Most of the new hard drives come with software that enables Macs to read and write to them without reformatting, thus they are completely interchangeable for data.

My laptop does not recognize my iomega hard drive

You need to format your drive to work with your Mac. The drive is shipped formatted as NTFS (Windows).
I'm going to assume that you are using Mac OS X 10.5 or later.
1. Open Disk Utility
2. Select Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
3. In the left hand column, click on the drive icon for the Iomega Hard Drive.
********Make sure you click on the high level icon, not the second level volume icon.********
4. Select the Partition tab.
5. Change Volume Scheme from Current to 1 Partition.
6. Select the format type from the Format drop-down menu.
Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (recommended) or Mac OS Extended.
7. Click on the Options button.
8. Select the type of partition you want to use:
GUID Partition Table - for boot ability on Intel-based Macs
Apple Partition Map - for boot ability on PowerPC-based Macs
Master Boot Record - if you will use the drive on a PC as well as your Mac. Use this option ONLY if you selected PC-DOS as the format type.
CAUTION! In most cases, the computer will fail to format the drive as a Mac OS Extended (HFS+) partition using Master Boot Record. For best results, always choose GUID Partition Table (Intel) or Apple Partition Map (PowerPC).
9. Click OK.
10. Click Apply (10.5-10.6) or Partition (10.4). The drive is ready to use when the format completes.

My louck flash is formated and now i can not use the space what do i do?

Your Imation Swivel Flash Drive comes formatted and ready to use right out of the box.
If you will be using the drive exclusively with Macintosh computers, do not format the Imation Swivel Flash Drive. The formatting message appears if your Macintosh has not yet been set up to read Windows-formatted files. Refer to your Mac's user manual to learn how to enable Windows file read functionality.
Also, be aware that when you format your Imation Swivel Flash Drive with NTFS, you will not be able to store as much data as your would without formatting. The format file used by NTFS will use some of the available space on the Flash drive - for instance, on a 128MB Imation Swivel Flash Drive, you may lose up to 8MB to the NTFS format files.

How do I format my Imation USB 2.0 Swivel Flash Drive in Windows? Your drive must be set up as a single public partition, since neither Windows Explorer nor the Macintosh OS will recognize a password protected partition.
To format the drive in Windows:
  • Go to My Computer
  • Locate the corresponding drive letter for the Swivel Flash drive (i.e. removable drive F)
  • Right click
  • Choose Format from the menu
A dialog box will come up and allow you to format your Swivel Flash Drive. Depending on your operating system, you can choose to format the drive in FAT, FAT32, or NTFS.

How to I remove or resize a partition on my Imation Swivel Pro Flash Drive? To resize or remove a secure partition, you will need to do the following:
  • Open the Flash Manager software on your hard drive
  • Choose Create a partition
  • Move the slider to zero (0)
Why don't I see a drive letter for my Imation Swivel Flash Drive?

This problem occurs if you map a network drive to the first available drive letter following the drive letters for the local volumes and CD/DVD drives. When you install a new device or volume, a software called Mount Manager tries to assign drive letters to the new volumes. But since the software does not recognize mapped drive letters, it assigns the next available local drive letter to the new device. This causes a collision with the existing mapped network drive.
Since the problem is related to your Microsoft operating system, they are your best source for resolving this issue. For more information, click here.

I use buffalo 1 TB external power hard disk on IMAC, it was work fine but now suddenly, when i copy any thing to it one error message came ''unexpected error--(error code 0)'' can't copy. please give me...

First when you attach it to your USB port it should come up as an external drive in any Finder window. If not then you need to run Disk Utility, found in Utilities in the Applications folder or just search in Finder for it. Select the external drive and make sure it says or and Partition Map Scheme : Apple Partition Map if it was formatted in 10.4 or earlier (you didn't say) or Partition Map Scheme : GUID Partition Table if formatted in 10.5 or later. If not formatted so, for example, it's Fat32, then it is set for a PC.
Assuming the last and that this is a new drive, you will need to format it for a Mac to be able to write. Select the Erase heading and for Format select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in 10.5 or later or Apple Partition Map in earlier versions. Name the disk. Press Erase, knowing that the drive will be cleared of data. You can also choose to partition the disk, usually not needed nor desireable.
You can then return to First Aid and Repair Disk and after that Fix Permissions. If your disk had data already (you seem to say so) then this is where you would start making sure it says Write Status : Read/Write.
If the Partition Map is not as given above and thus the disk is read-only, then you will need to transfer the data to your internal or another external with the right map. -Ken

Greetings.

files bigger than 4 gigs cannot be save on fat32 drives. NTFS file system is capable of saving files bigger than 4 gigs.

The MAC - to PC did nothing to change it. It did not change while she look it at her pc.

If u want to be able to copy files bigger than 4 gigs to your drive, change the format to ntfs.

  • It is easy to convert partitions to NTFS. The Setup program makes conversion easy, whether your partitions used FAT, FAT32, or the older version of NTFS. This kind of conversion keeps your files intact (unlike formatting a partition). If you do not need to keep your files intact and you have a FAT or FAT32 partition, it is recommended that you format the partition with NTFS rather than convert from FAT or FAT32. Formatting a partition erases all data on the partition and allows you to start with a clean drive. Whether a partition is formatted with NTFS or converted using the convert command, NTFS is the better choice of file system. For more information about Convert.exe, after completing Setup, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER. In the command window, type help convert and then press ENTER.

FreeAgent Drive is Read Only on Mac OS X

OK, after having read through these responses and having tried some different things, I wanted to post what worked for me, because there seems to be some confusion here. First of all, I took the route of trying the ntfs-3g driver. I downloaded it and looked at the directions for a Mac. I have only had my Mac for a little over a year and working with Fink or whatever was not user friendly, so I looked elsewhere. It turns out that Mac does INDEED do Fat32. As one of the other sites that I read says, it is not really very clearly done, but if you use the Mac disk utility application (it comes with Mac OS - I am using 10.5), then you can reformat the disk. It says "MS-DOS (FAT)" for creating the partition, but if it is a large partition, then it will automatically use FAT-32. So I have just formatted my 1.5 TB Free Agent drive with that and copied a .DOC and .PDF file onto the drive. It works fine on the Mac. Then I take it over to my Windows Vista machine, plug it in, and Windows Vista recognizes it, opens the Doc file in Word, the PDF in Adobe Acrobat, and it sees all of the disk space on the drive (after formatting, it says it is actually a little over 1.3 GB - Western Digital stretches it a bit by calling it 1.5 GB). Anyway, the bottom line is that it seems to work like a charm. One caveat is that apparently formatting such a disk with Windows Vista is limited to 32 GB partitions (see MS docs here - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc766145.aspx). However, that seems to be arbitrary and set by Microsoft and is not a technical limitation of the FAT32 technology. So that is how it worked for me.
