SOURCE: Hidden Ice build-up inside plastic bottom cover of freezer

Generally, icing is the result of too much water vapor inside the unit, blockage of the circulation channels and too much packing in of the box.  The water vapor is generally caused by: uncapped items in the fridge, opening the door too often, humid conditions, bad door seals.  There is of course, there is a possibility that the defrost cycle on the unit is not working.  About once a day, depending on the brand, you should notice that the fans and compressor don't run and you should hear a bit of creaking, sloshing or other strange noises as the ice melts.  If this is not happening, your defrost timer or the coil it heats could be bad.

SOURCE: Neverending ice cystals buildup in freezer

Hi Rachel,

Opened 3-10 times per day, per week, per month?

There is only one possible source of these ice crystals -- moisture precipitating from the air (condensate) -- this air is coming from outside the freezer. It's either getting in when the freezer is opened or coming in around the gasket.

You might try a very thin coat of vaseline on the gasket to get a better seal.

SOURCE: Leaking water and ice build-up in freezer

There's a drain hole in the freezer side behind the bottom drawer in the back wall that must be clogh ; put hot water into it untill melted the ice and keep pouring water to clean the drain (don't worry , the water goes to an evaporative tray) .Keep the drain clean by putting every 3/4 months half a cup of clorox or bleach.

Refrigerator is accumulating ice on the bottom of the freezer unit. Setting is at 0 degrees. There was no spillage.

Does the fridge have an automatic defrost? If so, it may not be working properly. My freezer runs for about 10 months without a problem but eventually ice begins to build up on the bottom. So, I have to perform a manual defrost to remove all the built-up ice inside. Then it will run fine for another 10 months or so when the ice builds up again.

Kenmore upright freezer

Hello;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

I am going to assume your compressor and condenser fan is running. Your condenser fan is in the lower back of your freezer.

You will need to remove the back cover in your freezer. There are 6 screws holding it on.

Check the following (Cover Removed):

1.) Frozen Drain - Your freezer goes into a defrost mode every 8-10 hours, where your freezer shuts down except for the lights, and your defrost heater turns on for about 20-30 minutes to defrost your cooling coil. If you have a frozen drain, the condensate builds up behind the back wall and icing the cooling coil, restricting air flow. You must defrost the coil.

2.) Freezer Fan Motor Failure - Having removed the back wall observe if the freezer fan motor is running. If not replace.

3.) Refrigerant Restriction or Leak - If you observe a large build-up of ice in the upper right hand corner, then you have a restriction or leak. The cost of repair would be about $400.00

4.) Bad Thermostat - In the upper right hand corner of you cooling coil, attached is your thermostat. They can explode, where the back of the thermostat will raise up.

You can also check it with a multi-meter, set to the lowest Ohms (Omega Symbol). You need to cut the wires, leaving enough wire length to rewire back in. Put the thermostat in a glass of ice water for 10 minutes. After, it should Ohm out around 16. It is reads '0' or infinity it is bad. Below 15 or 16 it is bad

Unit is a 690 S #P1520647, built 1999. ice maker drips water from behind bottom grill near left side of freezer box.

THE FILL TUBE IN BACK OF REFRIGERATOR CAN SLIP
AGAINST THE FILL RESERVOIR CAUSING A PARTIAL BLOCKAGE
OR BECOME CLOGGED WITH ICE.
REMOVE THE ICEMAKER AND INSPECT THE FILL TUBE.
RUN WATER IN TUBE TO ELININATE BLOCKAGE AND CHECK
TEMP IN FREEZER. IF TEMP IS BELOW 0 DEGREES, THATS
OVERKILL AND USUALLY A WASTE OF ELECTRICITY TO KEEP IT THAT COLD, NOT TO MENTION THE FILL TUBE FREEZING UP

In the house we just bought there is a copper brown top freezer Frigidaire which says it is a Deluxe 17. Cleaned it and plugged it in. Set freezer unit for "normal:" and refrigerator on...

Freezers only buils up layers of ice after multiple opebing and closing of doors allows fresh air inside, the moisture then freezes out of the air and builds up in layers on the cold surfaces. Note that the more ice that builds up decreases the efectivness of the freezr and thus costs more to run. To test try making ice cubes in atray. The number 1 setting on the fridge will be the warmest setting. Hope this helps.

SubZero 690: Frost builds up on ice chute flapper door

you have a bad seal, Take a dollar bill and slide it in between the door seal and the frig. slide it up and down to see if if has drag on it. If you find places it dont touch loosen the screws and adjust the hinges till it fits tight. In some cases you might have to tweak the doors if they need it.

Ice build up on the bottom of freezer

Check to see if after clearing out the ice sheet, that the gasket for the door is tight against the freezer. If air is leaking by the gasket, it will build up really quick.

Freezer side of 690 does not work (not even cool); refrigerator side works just fine.

Check the fan in the freezer department. It has to run when the door i closed. Sometimes the door switch is bad. This causes the freezer coils to ice up so the cold air does not go through the coil to cool the freezer. Unplug the power cord for 1 hour or two hours. Then plug the cord in and see if the freezer gets cold.
