Does the rear paper feed rollers need to be removed first?
SOURCE: brother printer mfc-7420 will not print
Manual feed is a by-pass tray (not the paper tray,)
in this particular model it looks like one of hte slots in the front. put a paper in and see if it grabs it.
you should be able to cancel out the job by pushing stop/cancel?
1-check the tray to make sure the paper size is correct
2-make sure it is set for tray not bypass

I'm not sure if you've already checked this, but this was my issue. I, too, would try to print something and it would make a great deal of clunking noise but would then say that there was no paper and told me to load some. I went to the Canon site and before I actually went through the process of cleaning the print roller, I checked the feed switch button on the display panel. It's right below the ON/OFF button and, what do you know, it was set to feed from a paper cassette instead of the back loading tray. I pushed the button and it's now printing fine. I'm sure we must have accidentally hit the button when we were trying to turn the printer on or off quickly. Hope this does the trick! It's always nice when it's something easily fixed!

ok, thank you
you probably had a document that was not using 8.5 x 11 paper or the print settings were the printer to use the manual tray.
thanks adi

Well, how to do that I don't know how to explain you, but first of all try to clean it, do it with thinner, this may solve your problem for while, at least until you find a way to remove and change.

Remove left cover (where the USB connection is located);
Remove gear with a spring on it (you may need to unscrew the PCB that partially covers it);
There is a clutch that sticks to the rubber pad behind this gear. You may put a piece of scotch tape towards to a rubber pad, so the plastic from the clutch mechanism wouldn't stick anymore.
