Whirlpool freezer on top ice maker is making a grinding noise and is not making ice Apiece of ice is sticking out of the icemaker's tray. we left it in the off position a couple of days. when we returned it was making this noise and not making ice. Is there a way to remove the ice maker and let it thaw out to see if that will set it right?

You should have three screws on the side of the ice make. Two right above the tray and one below. Remove the screws and unplug a four wire connector.
When you reinstall it check for proper water fill. A low water pressure to unit or ice maker valve getting plugged up can cause a small cube to get stuck.

Icemaker not making ice

Your inlet tube that goes to the icemaker may be frozen. To Check: Shut off water supply to Fridge, disconnect the water line that goes to the icemaker at top back. Use a flexible item to insert in the water line connection. I used a zip tie. If the flexible item won't all the through to the ice maker, the line is frozen. Thaw out the tube from inside the freezer with a hair dryer. Re-connect everything, you now have ice . . . Solution #2: You may have to replace your "Water Inlet Valve" located at bottom right rear of Fridge. Easy to do, just follow the color codes, be sure and shut off the water.

My icemaker fills the tray but when the water shuts off it drips on the the ledge under the tray and ice builds up. Also now my ice cube tray seems to be leaking. Are parts available or does the entire unit...

My ice maker would not return to a level position after dumping out the ice. When the water turned on to refill the ice tray, it would run off the tilted ice tray and into the ice basket thus freezing all the ice cubes in the basket together. To remove the icemaker, there are two screws that hold the icemaker to the top of the freezer. Turn off the icemaker. Remove the left screw and loosen the right screw by removing the screw on the left. Slide the icemaker outward and it should come loose. Unplug the power connector from the icemaker to the freezer. The ice tray can be removed from the icemaker by gently pulling the tray to the right and the slot it goes into on the left side of the icemaker to the left. Once the tray is out of the assembly, inspect the round plastic shaft on the left side of the ice tray. Mine had two flat spots that were worn into the plastic from use. I used a dremel tool with a round barrel sanding disk at the tools lowest speed to remove the flat spots and decrease the overall diameter of the shaft which stopped the tray from sticking. Reassemble the ice tray in the icemaker.

If the noise is only heard when you activate the icemaker, then your problem is probably with the icemaker. Some icemakers make more noise than others. If it's unbearable, replace the icemaker.

Ice maker not hooked up (on purpose). The ice

Sounds like you are not going to use the automatic icemaker, so I would remove the whole icemaker unit which will include disconnecting the wire harness behind the icemaker which will shut off power to the icemaker and will also give you more storage room in your freezer compartment. This will not harm the refrigerator or the icemaker, you could also disconnect the waterline if you want. Please note that this solution applies to the top freezer, and bottom freezer style refrigerators only thatt DO NOT have dispensers through the door. Good luck !

Whirlpool Gold Model GS5SHAXNL 00 makes loud grinding noise about every 40 minutes

I would check your ice maker. You can shut it off by slidding the control on the right hand side of the freezer wall. If the noise quits you need to repair the icemaker. In door ice has had some problem with their icemakers. If that is it they make a kit part #8201515 that will fix it.

The ice coating usually means that your door was left slightly open. Did the ice maker work after you cleaned up the ice?
