Find the fuse that supplies power to the lighter socket and remove it (It may already be blown). Once that is done you can safely remove it with a thin screwdriver or tweezers.
Pull the fuses to the lighters and then you can retrieve it safely.
Be sure to check the fuse in case it already blew. You wouldn't want to put the bad fuse in and then think you had a faulty lighter!

HI,this sounds like you blew a fuse,there should be a diagram on the inside cover of the fuse box,if not your owners manual will have it.if you dont have either im sure you can find the manual online,in pdf form for free.dont wanna do that?then you you can check them in the car using a 12v test light,or just start pulling the 15amp fuses & checking them(it will look burnt)hope this helps,thanx for using fix ya,please rate all replys

a penny will definitly short the fuse every time. fuse locations usually found in the owners manual. no year provided so cant tell where but usual locations for fuse panels left or right side of dash, glovebox of underhood. lids to fuse panels sometimes also marked with what circuit aka.cigar lghter..that the fuse protects
