The round metal ball thing as you call it is the compressor. They generally run pretty quietly but do rattle a bit when they stop. The casing will also feel fairly hot to the touch. However, if the compressor is making a constant rattling noise I think that maybe you should get it looked at. Since this is the main thing that runs a refrigerator I would imagine that replacing it might be fairly expensive. You'll need to balance repair against new depending on how old the 'fridge is. Sorry to be a bit of a gloom merchant but I have to tell it as I see it.
