I just had the same problem. I had turned on my phone in the usual way and once it loaded I noticed it was in safe mode. This was not something I had told the phone to do. 1st I unplugged the phone from the charger. 2nd I removed the back cover and the battery. 3rd I held down the power key for 15 seconds. 4th I reinstalled the battery and back cover. And finally I turned the phone back on. NOTE: my phone started up and then restarted itself as soon as it was done loading. Now everything appears to be working correctly and efficiently.

To START "Safe Mode" use both hands to Press the Home Key (bottom centre) and then simultaneously Press BOTH the Power (right hand side) key, and the Volume-Up (left-hand side) key. Safe mode on g1 wont go away
press the red phone button and choose turn off then press ok when the next window comes up and the phone will shut down.try and turn it back on wait for it to load up and you should be good to go

Generally, if a mouse button quits working, it requires the replacement of the touchpad assembly.
Boot to the safe mode, see if the button works there, if it doesn't, then it is a failure of the switch in the button

Using the safe mode feature on your T-Mobile G1 will allow you to easily pin point an issue you are experiencing with the device. Follow these steps to enable and disable the safe mode feature.

  1. HOW TO TAKE YOUR T-MOBILE G1 OUT OF SAFE MODE

    If you have found yourself in safe mode and don't know how to turn it off, or if you are finished troubleshooting, turn your device off as you usually would. When you restart the T-Mobile G1 should not be in safe mode anymore.

  2. If the T-Mobile G1 is still in safe mode when you restart, there is something else wrong with your device. At this point you will need to contact technical support to assist in diagnosing the issue.

Blue light on top of g1
I solved this problem by booting into SAFE MODE on the G1:
Press Menu Button and Switch on the G1 Phone using Power button. (Do not release menu Key).
That Got it to turn on. but upon power down it did the same thing with blue light. So I always start in SAFE MODE. I will start uninstalling programs until i find out which one is causing problem.

Safe mode
Well I don't know if this will help your G1 but it did to mine. 1st If your charging it disconnect it 2nd Open your back cover and take out the battery 3rd Hold the power button (the red one obviously) for 15 seconds 4th Once your done with that replace the battery and cover Once you turn your phone on it should be out of safe mode otherwise call tmobile or whatever service provider you have they should help or call the android People. Hope this solved your problom.

G1 phone menu button will not work!
I had this issue and I thought it was dirt or something underneath the button. I took the phone apart and found the problem. Turns out it was dust or built up dried condensation on the motherboard where the ribbon cable that connects the buttons. Look for the youtube video on how to take apart the phone and it's the connection on the bottom of the phone to the right. and just use some alcohol and q-tips to clean the connections.

G1 safe mode
Power the device off, while it is off press and hold the Menu button and the Red Power Button at the same time, when the phones boots back up the Safe Mode should be off. If this does not work a Master Reset may be required.
