Warning : Gas systems are generally safe but any gas smell should always be investigated by a certified technician as you can never be too safe.

That being said, let me try to assist you as best I can from my experience with gas appliances.

If the smell has been there since you bought the unit, it is probably the pilot you are smelling. Generally, a pilot light is first ignited using either an electro-mechanical switch or using electricity to create a spark.

While ignition is taking place, a small amount of gas is allowed to flow through the ignition pilot nozzle. The spark is meant to ignite the pilot flame. When the pilot flame is lit, a thermocouple is heated up and then allows gas to flow to the main burners. The gas in the main burners then ignites directly from the pilot flame. This is generally how gas burners work but there are many types of equipment and not all of them work on the same principles.

Generally when you smell gas before igniting the main burner but detect no smell after the main burner is on, it has to do with problems in the ignition stage. This could be caused by a number of things but often the ignition probe is the problem. The ignition probe arcs a spark between two probes or between a probe and the burner which is meant to ignite the pilot gas nozzle (or in some cases ignites the main burner directly). Everytime this spark is made, a small amount of carbon forms at the connection point of the sparks. The carbon can build up over time and cause difficulty sparking the ignition of the pilot burner. Spilled food can also cause this or speed up the buildup of carbon.

If the gas can't ignite the pilot immediately, the pilot keeps allowing gas to pass into the air until ignited which is what you could be smelling. Check to see how long after you try to start the burner does it actually ignite. More than a couple of seconds and you will be smelling the gas that escaped without being burned off.

You can try disconnecting the unit from mains power and cleaning the ignition probes on each burner. If the unit has a mechanical starter you should take extra care not activate it during cleaning as you could get a electric shock. Clean the probe with a damp cloth or paper towel and don't use any cleaning agents.

If this does not eliminate the smell you are getting before ignition, you should get a technician to test the unit. The explanation above is also very general as I don't know what specific system you are using so use the explanation given as general knowledge only and get a technician to perform the repairs.

The Little Giant units use a Unitrol gas valve very similar to a water heater in the home. #1,urn the Unitrol gas valve to the "PILOT" position to ignite the pilot. Depress the plunger and hold it down then push the spark igniter button until you can see the pilot flame ignite.
You have a lit pilot so this is not a problem for you.
The pilot light stays on continuously by design.
Once the pilot flame is established, you then turn the on/off/pilot valve to the "ON" position and set the thermostat to the desired temperature range., it should then fire its main burner until the desired temperature is reached. Once the temperature is reached, the main burner will shut off and the heater will go into a standby mode with the pilot flame still burning.
If you have turned the pilot valve to on and set the temperature high, it should come on, if not a new gas valve is required, they can be very difficult to replace due to rust.and most cases require a new unit,

Assuming you have electronic ignition on your stovetop, you may have spilled food onto the burner which has clogged the holes needed to get gas to the spark ignitor. Clean the holes (or slits) and dry them and try again. If they are not dirty, check to make sure you have a spark at each burner. If you have manual pilots, there could be many other problems, like the pilot is not lit, dirty vertical holes (on the burner side) at the pilot tunnel or tunnel is not positioned properly.

The first thing I would do is make sure the flame sensor is clean, this is a metal rod immersed in the burner flame on the opposite side of the igniter. If too much oxidation builds up on it, it will not allow the burner to stay lit. To clean, just turn off furnace and remove flame sensor and clean with steel wool and then reinstall. If this does not solve the problem there may be a problem with the gas valve.

Several steps here to check...
turn power off unit and back on
set thermostat to heat
watch for pilot to ignite..igniter should glow orange or cherry red or spark if its a spark type ignitor
Did you see a pilot light ignite?

If not you probably have a bad igniter.

If pilot lit....in a little bit you hear a click of the gas valve opening..then the main burners will ignite

If you see the pilot and the main burner lights but goes out in a few minutes or immediately you may have an issue of the "high limit" switch tripping.

Is the blower fan turning that blows air out of your vents?
are all your vents open in your house? too many times i see homes with almost all vents shut.

That model is an electronic ignition, ther isn't a standing pilot on it(no liitle flame that stays lit). Light the burner by pushing in on the knob and turnlig to "LITE" position, you will hear a clicking noise the sound of the electric spark igniting the burner, turn the knob to adjust the flame size. Keep in mind that all igniters spark whenever any of the knobs are turned to the "LITE" position. Good luck !

This is caused by a faulty pilot safty valve. it will be the tee looking valve with the red dime sized button in the middle.

Most problems with gas ranges have to do with the flame--either it isn't quite right or it's nonexistent. Most new gas ranges have "electronic ignition," a spark igniter that starts the flame as gas flows through the burners. If, when you turn on a burner, it fails to spark but you hear sparking at other burners, the igniter or the burner switch probably needs replacement by an appliance repairperson. If your range has a pilot light, be sure the pilot light is lit.
