The entire trimmer assembly (from the gearbox forward) will slide off of the drive shaft cover. On the side of the aluminum gearbox assembly, you will find a single screw. This is the "anti-rotation screw" (do not lose this). Then remove the small (approximately 1" diameter) clamp from the end of the gear box assembly and simply pull the entire cutting assembly off of the shaft.

If you just want to remove the trimmer bump head assembly, then you will need to lock the bump head assembly to prevent rotation while you are working. If you purchased this new, then there should be a small metal rod included with your accessories. This will fit in a small hole in the base of the gear box assembly 791-182193 and prevents the trimmer head from rotating.

Then proceed to remove the following items:

791-180814B (replaces 791-180814) Bump Head Knob Assembly
791-147495 Inner Reel (hold the trimmer string)
791-610636B (replaces 791-610636) Spring
791-612026 Retainer (be careful removing this so you do not inadvertently destroy it). If you intend to reuse the trimmer head. If not, then hack, pry, stab, etc.. until you mangle it enough to remove.
791-683301 Outer Spool & Eyelet Assembly should now slide out leaving only 791-612483
Spool Shaft which I will assume that you want to keep.

I replaced my entire string head assembly a couple of years ago (and subsequently misplaced it and am in fact wanting to purchase one) and replaced it with a grass-gater or similar.

I hope this helps.

I have been unable to find a way to remove the trimmer head so that I can replace it with an aftermarket. I've disassembled it to this point, you can see that there is no hole in the gear box to "unscrew" the head. You can see I've taken out most of the inside, see how the six sided shaft fits into a six sided plastic spool head? Now look in the far right side corner - that's what TroyBilt said it's supposed to look like. Any suggestions for adding the aftermarket head? remove the trimmer head from shaft - 9_9_2012_2_14_18_am.jpg

How to stop trimmer line spool from spinning off

I bought a Shakespeare Push-n-Load 3 blade trimmer head at The Home Depot for about 26 dollars and picked up a pack of 12 replacement blades for another 7. Did a whole 3 acres worth of weed whacking and still didn't need to change the blades. I was also powering through some pretty thick bushes with ease. Highly recommended.

I have a Echo Gas trimmer SRM-210 Rapid feeder dual line. I need to know how to remove the entire drum for the string spool? NOT how to re-string but how to replace entire head/spool, as if I was going to...

In your manual under section 12: Line Head Installation. You will do the opposite of what it says here. The key is to LOCK the gear drive so the flex-drive shaft won't turn WHEN you are removing the trimmer head. They use a special tool (maybe you have it). But a small-shafted Phillips screwdriver or the like can be put in the drive hole to lock the gearing up as well. Look for the hole in the upper plate and align with the notch in the drive housing and grasping the entire string head unit, remove it. Here is your manual, see Section 12

Weedeater starts fine but the string head will not spin. I removed the string head, and the shaft it connects to is not spinning either.

The shaft cable has either come loose at the head, or is broken at the engine most likely. Is this a 2 piece unit? If so, see if the cable turns with the grass trimmer section removed. If so, it is usually easiest to just replace the trimmer shaft section. One piece units require disassembly at the engine, and if you are not mechanically inclined, that can be a pain.

Ref: Stihl FS46 string trimmer. Broken Flex shaft.

Remove orange sheild, remove single screw holding head in shaft then grab head with pliers and twist side to side until complete head is free. You should then be able to grab part of shaft. On power head loosen screws {about one turn each} that hold two white case halves near trigger,I think there are four, then there is a single torx screw on the bottom of lower case half in the middle that must be taken out to allow tube to be removed.Romove flexshaft from top.Check 4 plastic burnt to flexshaft,if there is you must replace tube liner as well, usally around bent part of tube the liner will go bad.

NEED INSTRUCTION SHEET FOR LINE INSTALLATION

If it is a duel line trimmer then:

Cut two separate pieces of string, about 7 ft. each.

Stick the end of the line in the hole on the inside of spool.

Wind clockwise onto spool, putting the line that is closest to the ground on first.

Once you have winded this piece on, lock the last 4 inches of line through the slits on spool.

Repeat process for second piece of line, locking the last 4 inches in slot opposite the other locked in piece.

Put the spool on the trimmer, feeding the end of lines through either hole on trimmer.

Before you push the spool all the way on, pull the strings out of the locked position.

If it is a single line trimmer: Then just wind a single piece of string clockwise onto spool. This may need to be longer than 7ft.

Homelite trimmer runs, but can't run attachments very fast.

Doesn't sound like piston and ring problem. Sounds more like the flex shaft that connects to the engine may have an end that is worn not allowing for the extra load when you connect the attachments. Check the ends of the top flex shaft.
